“The very top,” Wyatt says, nodding.

“I think…what if I’m scared to go to the top?” she asks, glancing out the window nervously.

“If you get scared, just look at me or the two of them”—he points at Logan and me—“and you’ll feel better.” He puts his hand on her shoulder, and she nestles into the crook of his arm for a second and sighs, like she’s right where she wants to be.

A wistful sigh comes out of me too, wishing I could be surrounded by his strong shoulders and toasty goodness. So instead of overthinking it, I lean into him, and he glances at me, surprised. His other arm goes around me and I tuck in close.

“Aren’t y’all cozy?” Logan says, smirking at me.

I roll my eyes but grin at him, and when I look over to see Wyatt up close and smiling back at me, everything inside me warms.

“It’s good to see that smile on you,” he says softly. “I’ve been worried about you.”

“I’m sorry I’ve made you worry.”

“As long as you’re okay, I will be too.”

I swallow hard. “I will be, I think.”

Concern flickers in his eyes, but he nods. “And you’ll fill me in on what’s going on sometime?”

“Yes,” I whisper.

He nods again. “I’ll be right here until you do.”

Guilt consumes me, and if we weren’t on a crowded gondola and I wasn’t terrified about his response, I’d lean over and whisper it in his ear right now.

I can’t keep putting off telling him the truth.

CHAPTERFORTY-FOUR

AFTER DINNER MINT

WYATT

Dinner goes well.

I like Logan a lot, and it’s fun watching him and Marlow together. Blake and Camilla are both in the restaurant tonight, and it’s apparent within a few minutes of talking to her that they are sold on Marlow. And Dakota, for that matter.

When I walk to the men’s room before dessert, I stop by the bar.

“You think the two of you could make it a little more obvious that you like Marlow for me?” I ask them, leaning on the bar.

Camilla laughs and bumps Blake’s hip. “Should we say it outright the next time we’re at the table?”

“You already have with your expressions.” I do a reenactment of them walking by the table with wide eyes and tucked in shoulder, and Camilla cackles.

“I did not do that,” she says.

“That was Blake. This is you.” I point at the stool in front of me. “Pretend that’s Marlow.” I give Camilla a dry look and start waving my hands and mouthing,oh my God.

“Pfft,” Camilla says. “I don’t act like that.” She smirks.

“We can tone it down a bit if you want us to,” Blake says. “I can tell her you’ve reserved the entire restaurant for the two of you and your special news…think we can get an engagement party on the books?” he asks Camilla.

“Don’t you dare,” I say under my breath, sweating now. He’s capable of doing something like that, and normally, I’d think Marlow could take it, but tonight’s not the night.

He holds up his hands. “Okay, okay.” He leans in. “I’m feeling love in the air, and you’re not getting any younger.” He winks and puts his arm around Camilla. “Best thing I ever did was marry this girl right here.”
