And then I hug Sofie. “No place I’d rather be.” I sniffle and take a deep breath, trying to hold back the tears.
“I’ve cried more since coming to Landmark than I have in my life,” Sofie says, laughing. “And it doesn’t seem like it’s stopping anytime soon.” She turns and looks at Dakota, hugging her to her side. “And I wantyouto be my flower girl, peanut.”
Dakota’s eyebrows lift sky-high and she claps her hands, doing a little dance in her seat. “Yes! I want it!” she says. “What is a flower girl?”
We all laugh, and Sofie bends down and holds up a gift bag for Dakota. Dakota’s eyes are wide as she carefully pulls out the tissue paper and then lifts a gorgeous little crown.
We all gasp, Dakota the loudest.
“It’s the prettiest,” she says in awe.
“You’ll get to wear this crown and a pretty dress that we’ll pick out together, and you’ll sprinkle flower petals before I walk down the aisle,” Sofie says.
“I love flower girls!” Dakota says.
Scarlett lifts her glass and Dakota grabs hers and we all clink again.
“This is going to be the most beautiful wedding Landmark Mountain has ever seen,” Scarlett says.
“Well, as beautiful as we can pull off in a short amount of time,” Sofie says, making a funny face. “Think we can pull off an October wedding?”
Holly’s mouth drops. “We’re already into September.”
“It’s better than what Theo wanted,” Scarlett says. “He wanted them to get married the night he asked her.”
We all laugh and Sofie flushes.
“I don’t need anything fancy. And we can do it on an odd day or a weird time if we need to, whatever we can all pull off. We’d like to do it down by the lake on Theo’s property.” Her cheeks lift with how big she’s smiling. “Just something simple.”
“Yourproperty too now,” Scarlett reminds her.
“That will be beautiful,” I say. “And as long as you have the dress you want, it seems like the rest should fall into place easily since you’re doing it at your place.”
“I haven’t even looked at dresses yet,” Sofie admits. “But I love the one you made for Grinny’s party. Something simple, but created by you,” she says to Scarlett. “No pressure atallthough. There might not be time for that.”
“Oh my God, there is nothing I’d love more,” Scarlett squeals. “I wouldn’t want to do you wrong though. You know I’m not a wedding dress professional.”
“Didn’t that dress only take you a weekend?” Holly says, scrunching up her nose. “Insanely talented.”
“I know. It’s just not fair that you have that much talent,” April says.
“Wow, I can’t believe you made that,” I add. “I thought your dress was so pretty that night, but I never dreamed you’d made it!”
Scarlett ducks her head modestly and thanks us before quickly changing the subject. “What colors are you thinking for us to wear?”
“I’m all over the place on this, so tell me what you think,” Sofie says. “You could all wear whatever pretty dresses you want, maybe in blues like my ring…or would it be weird to just say any kind of neutral? Cream or gold or silver?”
“I love those ideas,” I say. “And we’ll do whatever you want.”
“Exactly,” April says. “Whatever you want.”
“October is such a beautiful time of year, by the water and with the fall colors, I love the idea of us wearing neutrals, and that should be easy to find,” Scarlett says. “Should we do a Boulder shopping trip or do you want us to just work on finding our dresses on our own time?”
“I’d love to go to Boulder, but I’d rather not do an overnight,” Sofie admits, pressing her lips together as she gives us a sheepish look. “Sorry. I promise I’m not going to be one of those people who can never do anything outside of her husband, but I was away from him for so long and I’m—”
I put my hand on hers. “You don’t owe us any explanations, Sof. For once in your life, please be selfish. Say exactly what you want and let us do whatever we can to make that happen.”
“Marlow, IknewI liked you,” Scarlett says, her smile wide. She looks at Sofie. “Marlow’s exactly right. The whole point of this is to give you and Theo the experience you want. We can make a day of it and get back by that night, or we can find things online…order them and try them on together at one of our houses. Whatever is fun and makes you happy.”
