“Well, now I feel so selfish, not wanting to be away from Jamison when you’ve never even been away from Dakota,” Scarlett says.

“I don’t have to go,” I say, shaking my head.

“Well, then we won’t go,” Sofie and Scarlett say at the same time. They look at each other and laugh.

“No, you have to. This sounds so fun. I just…I don’t know what options I’d really have,” I say.

“We could do two things. One, I’m sure Grinny would be thrilled to have her stay with her, if Dakota would be okay with that, but the other option…what if Grinny went and you could see Dakota whenever you wanted and even if Dakota spent the night with Grinny, you’d still see her before she went to sleep and all that.” Scarlett lifts her eyebrows. “What do you think?”

“That sounds like a lot of work for Grinny,” I say, making a face.

“I’d love to have Dakota and Grinny around for whatever festivities they could be part of,” Sofie says. “And I bet Grinny is up for anything. She always is.”

“We’ll figure something out,” Scarlett says. “But set aside those dates, everyone, becausewhereverwe end up, we’ll be there together.”

My eyes meet Wyatt’s and his dark hair falls over his forehead, his green eyes unreadable and yet mesmerizing. I can’t help but feel like I need to buckle up because this ride is just going to get bumpier.

CHAPTERTWELVE

CURRENCY

WYATT

I walk outside on my break and stop when I hear Marlow.

She sounds upset and I look around to see her pacing between the trees in the courtyard, talking on the phone.

“You have a lot of nerve calling me,” she says.

I’ve been on the receiving end of Marlow’s anger a few times now to know that was nothing compared to this. It feels wrong that I’m hearing this conversation, but she sounds so agitated that I don’t want to leave her alone either.

“No, trust me, the fact that you’re in Cash’s bed these days only means that you should lose my number and never call me again.”

Shit. The girl who slept with her husband called? That’s beyond ballsy.

“Oh, he’s all yours, honey. You can have him,” she says and pauses, stopping just past the tree.

I can tell the moment she sees me because her shoulders go even more rigid. Dammit. There’s still time to leave, but I don’t move.

Her head tilts and she stares at me, her eyes narrowing.

“By all means, if your daddy can get things moving faster, so be it,” she says. “I hope you and Cash have a nice life.”

She hangs up, and her chest rises and falls faster and faster. I walk toward her when I see her hand shaking.

“Are you okay?” I ask.

I hold my hand out to touch her and leave it suspended in the air, hovering over her shoulder.

“I can’t believe she called me,” she says, choking out that painful laugh again. “What an awful human.”

She puts her fingers on her forehead and takes a deep breath. When her eyes finally meet mine, she lets out an exhausted exhale that nearly brings me to my knees. She looks so weary, so beaten.

“I’m sorry you had to hear any of that,” she says.

I shake my head slightly. “You don’t need to apologize—”

“Yes, I do. You keep seeing me at my worst.”
