When I walk past the reception desk on my way to the cafeteria for lunch and both Bobby and David are standing at Marlow’s desk, competing for her attention as she gives them a pained smile, I’m compelled to step in.

“Gentleman,” I say briskly. “If only the hospital were like an airline and had a frequent flier club, am I right? You’d both have lots of miles accumulated after all these visits.”

Both men look startled and then laugh, David more boisterously than Bobby, who eyes me suspiciously.Yeah, buddy, I see you.Marlow stares at me as if she can’t believe I’m stepping in here. I can’t blame her for that.

“I need to ask both of you to make your stops at the reception desk brief—”

“No one is here,” Bobby interrupts, turning around to show me the obvious…there’s no line behind him.

Fortunately, someone walks in just then and Bobby rolls his eyes. But that person ends up sitting down by the front window like they’re waiting on someone else.

“I still have work to do when no one is in line,” Marlow says quietly. Her tone is somewhat apologetic but firm, and she glances at me gratefully after she’s said it.

It’s ridiculous how my chest wells up. I probably need to make an appointment myself…see if something is wrong withme.

“Well, in that case, can I have your number?” Bobby says, grinning wide.

What a piece of work.

David glares at Bobby and then smiles at Marlow, turning the charm on. “I’d love to take you out to dinner sometime.”

This is not going how I intended at all and I’m about to shut them down when Marlow stands up and picks up a folder.

“I don’t date patients, hospital policy,” she says sweetly.

She then walks past the three of us and leaves us staring at her stunning legs and the mesmerizing sway of her hips and perfect ass. Her long hair bounces slightly with each step.

Damn.

Bobby and Dave grumble under their breath and before Bobby walks away, he looks at me and says, “Sucks to be you. Since she can’t date patients, I’m sure she can’t date doctors either.” He shrugs and walks away.

Bastard.

But I’m not even slightly mad.

I turn and go in Marlow’s direction. When she hears me behind her, she turns and pauses. I grin at her and she eyes me suspiciously. Again, I can’t blame her for that.

Her eyes narrow. “Are you being…smug?”

“Uh, no?” Yes. I chuckle and she smirks. “What?”

“Are you sure you’re not having indigestion or something? Do I need to find Dr. Emma and ask her to fit you in?”

“No, you’re mistaking me with your friends back there. They’re the ones with the indigestion and various other issues. Good thing we cleared that up.”

“I handled it.” She shrugs, but she’s grinning wider now.

“So, this hospital policy…what page is that on again? I’ve never seen that about patient fraternization…I just want to make sure I’m following the rules.”

Now she’s trying not to laugh. “It’s on page five, section 3.a., second paragraph.”

The way she can bullshit on the spot is sexy as hell.

“Ahhh. Got it. Very helpful, thank you.”

“You really should refresh on the rules, Dr. Wyatt.”

The sass on this woman.
