“Uh, no, I don’t think so. Unless I’m forgetting wedding stuff. Why?”

“There’s something I think you and Dakota would love. If you’re free, dress in layers and I’ll pick you up at ten.”

My mouth parts as I try to come up with a reason why we probably shouldn’t spend time together outside of the hospital and wedding activities, but it seems harmless. Dakota will be with us and this is what friends do, right? Hang out with each other?

Except my cheeks feel flushed and I’m sweaty and I know that’s not friend behavior.

“Okay,” I say reluctantly. “Maybe.”

Dakota’s hand pops between us as she sits on the stairs, her hand fitting easily through the railing. She waves. “I can’t wait. What are we gonna do, Wyatt?”

He grins at me before placing his hand on the railing. His arms are so ripped, not bulky but toned to perfection. I swallow hard and look away.

“How about a surprise? Do you like surprises?” he asks Dakota.

“I love surprises! But where are we going?” she asks.

He laughs. “That would ruin the surprise.”

I bite the inside of my cheek and then laugh. “Good luck with that. She can grill like nobody’s business.”

Sofie sets something down and I look at her. She and Theo are watching the three of us like we’re their only entertainment.

“What?” I ask.

Sofie’s eyes go wide and she looks at Theo, shaking her head.

“Nothing,” Sofie says. “Right?”

He clears his throat and grins, nodding. “Right.”

I narrow my eyes. “You guys are being weird.”

“Get used to it. I swear, Theo and Sofie have their own language. Just be glad that you missed being here after they first got together,” Wyatt says. “I’m just now getting used to seeing them again. They didn’t show their faces for weeks.”

“Not true,” Theo says.

“Well, maybe for a minute or two because Grinny forced you to family dinners,” Wyatt says.

Sofie flushes and can’t stop smiling.

“I guess I got here at just the right time,” I say.

“Yes, you did,” Wyatt says under his breath.

My stomach drops a little in an excited lurch.

Friends, friends, friends, friends, I remind myself.

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

ROYAL TREATMENT

WYATT

I stop by Happy Cow on my way to Marlow’s the next Saturday morning.

They’re out of some of the things Marlow and Dakota ordered when we were here before, so I fill a box with chocolate croissants and bear claws and the one donut with sprinkles left in the case.
