She grins. “Yep, that’s Logan. He’s trouble, but I love him.”
“Where is he?”
“It’s hard to keep track of where he is. He travels nonstop.” She shakes her head. “I’m trying to get him to come visit. I don’t know if he’ll ever settle in one place…” She looks at me wistfully. “You’re lucky that you live close to all your siblings. Logan and I are close, but we both got out of the house as soon as we could, and Logan hasn’t stopped moving since.”
“Sounds like there’s a story there.”
“Yeah, if I can ever get him to slow down long enough to tell it.”
We make our way to my car, after grabbing Dakota’s car seat, and she bounces all the way. I’m excited to show her the surprise, but I’d be just as happy hanging out with them here.
Every little bit of revelation into who Marlow is intrigues me.
I just want more.
CHAPTERNINETEEN
COMPETITION
MARLOW
I think Dakota and I both gasp at the same time when we see the long slides that disappear up into the mountain.
I’ve never seen anything like it. There are two carts going side by side, one a few feet ahead of the other.
“What is this?” Dakota asks, a bit awestruck.
“This is the resort’s alpine slide. It’s only open in the summertime, along with the coaster…which you can go on when you’re a little older. What do you think? Do you want to try the slide?” Wyatt asks.
“I can try it?” Dakota asks. “I’m not too little?”
“I thought maybe I’d go in one cart and you and your mom could go down the other and we’d race down the hill.”
I turn to look at him, mouth gaping. “And that’s safe?”
“Yes. I haven’t ever treated anyone from accidents on this…everything else in town, yes, but not the alpine slides.”
Dakota looks more excited than nervous and I reluctantly nod.
“Okay, if you’re sure.” I’m smiling when I tear my eyes away from the view in front of us. “It looks really fun.”
We make our way to get in line for the chairlift ride.
“The lift up is almost as great as the slide,” he says.
He looks animated, much looser than at work, his eyes lit with excitement. It’s hard to notice anything else when he looks like this. He puts his hand on the small of my back as we get closer and I feel warmth radiating into me. It’s more than his touch, which I can’t think about for too long because it feels so good…
It’s the way he wants to do something special for Dakota and me.
The time he’s already invested in us this morning, and every time he sees Dakota.
It’s the way he listens to her like she’s the most interesting creature he’s ever heard.
The way he looks at me.
We get on the lift and the ride for the next few minutes is breathtaking.
Dakota points out things and can hardly contain her excitement now that we’re going up.
