I love days with no plans.

But even after a hike I’m restless, and it annoys me because I’ve never been bothered by how quiet my condo is or that I’m waking up alone, eating alone…existingalone.

Most of the time, my family makes up for any lack I could possibly feel, and I don’t know why hanging out with Marlow and Dakota only makes me ache for more.

They’re busy today anyway, I remind myself. Sofie’s shower is this afternoon and I’ll see Marlow at work this week…and the Vegas trip is next weekend.

I think the last time I moped around was in seventh grade when I was stuck inside with the flu on a day I was supposed to go skiing. The fuck is wrong with me?

I wish I could blame this melancholy on a fever.

After staring inside my refrigerator for far too long, I pick up the phone and call my brother.

Callum picks up on the third ring.

“Wyatt.” He never says hello.

“What are you doing?”

“Delphine got into the house again. And I just barely managed to keep Irene from following her.”

“Good God. When are you gonna get rid of that goat?”

“The hell?” he snaps.

“It’s a reasonable question. Next thing you know, she’s gonna be holding seances in your living room with her cow buddy and you’ll be out in the barn.”

“Don’t be stupid. I’ve been skimping on the peanut butter with her this week and she was just having a little protest.”

“Just having a little protest,” I repeat. “You do realize I’m not the one talking stupid, right?”

“Shut up,” he grumbles.

I gasp in mock outrage. “It’s a good thing Grinny’s not hearing this conversation.”

Growing up, there were a few things Grinny was firm on. She didn’t love cursing, but she absolutely would not tolerateshut up,idiot, orstupid. We’re at two out of three right now.

“I stand by it,” he says. And then under his breath, he adds, “Idiot.”

“You did not.” I laugh.

I think I might hear him laugh a little too, but it was probably my imagination.

“What do you want, Wy? Some of us have things to do.”

“Oh, am I keeping you from Delphine? It’s no wonder you’re single, brother.”

He snorts. “Say that to me when you’ve got a woman.”

“I thought maybe you’d be up for a beer or something…I can come over and…help with Delphine.”

“You all right?” he asks.

I don’t know.

“Yeah…I’m fine.”

“I’ll see you soon.” He hangs up.
