“Is it my imagination or is he blushing?” I ask.

“It’s hard to tell with only the twinkle lights out here, but…I think so,” she whispers. “They look really sweet together. Do you think they’d ever—”

For a second, I think there might be a spark there, but seeing the grim expression on Grinny’s face and then the way she lets go and nods at Pappy when the song ends, hurrying away…I shake my head.

“No…I don’t think so. I think they’re just friends.”

“Hmm. Well, we know how that can turn out,” she says softly.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-NINE

OVER THE OVERS

Marlow

A couple weeks later, I hang up from Sofie’s call and am still smiling.

She told me all about their honeymoon—well, notallabout it, but a few of the highlights from their time in Alaska.

I get back to cleaning my place. Dakota’s at a birthday party for another hour and Wyatt went to run a few errands. We’ve been spending so much time together, it feels strange to be alone this afternoon, but my overflowing laundry basket needed the attention. We’re supposed to go over to Grinny’s house later, and I need a cute, clean dress to wear.

I set the basket of clean laundry on the shelf above the washer and start folding, absentmindedly reaching up to close the door of the cabinet that holds detergent and extra toiletries. A tampon drops onto the shelf and I pick it up to put it back in the box above the cabinet, pausing to stare at the box.

My periods have been more irregular than usual with all the stress of the move and all that, but…how long has it been this time?

Oh God.

I break out into a sweat and rush to my phone to see if I put it in my tracker like I’m supposed to. Dammit. I haven’t been keeping up with it like I should be, but I know it’s been a while.

You’re not pregnant, I tell myself, sliding my feet into my tennies and grabbing my keys.

There hasn’t been a single time we’ve gone without condoms. Not because I haven’t wanted to, but because I’ve needed to make an appointment with a gyno here and get my prescription for birth control renewed.

I don’t want the whole town knowing I might be pregnant, but can I really wait for an Amazon delivery to find out? I don’t think so. I won’t rest until I know for sure. So, I run over to Cecil’s since it’s the closest. While I’m walking to the car, I see Wyatt walking out of the store with a few grocery bags and a handful of flower bouquets.

He stops walking when he sees me and makes a face. “Busted.”

“What?” I yelp.

“You caught me,” he says, waving the flowers. He frowns. “Are you okay? You went pale on me.”

“Oh,” I laugh weakly, “flowers. Yay.”

He chuckles and comes closer, kissing me on the cheek. “I’ll go put them in water and you can pretend to be surprised when you get home. You should have told me you needed to come here—I could’ve grabbed it.”

“I…didn’t know.”

He studies me a second longer. “You sure you’re okay?”

I nod and don’t trust myself to say anything, which makes the whole conversation even more awkward.

“Okay then, I’ll see you back at the house…if that’s all right with you?” he asks.

“I’ll be a little bit. Picking Dakota up from the party after this.”

“Oh, that’s right. Do you…need a little time just you guys? I can go grab my mail, get a few things ready for the week, and pick you up for dinner.”

“Okay,” I say softly.
