“Ahh,” she squeals when she turns around, my T-shirt hitting her upper thighs and my sweater falling off one of her shoulders.

Her long legs are a sight to behold in the brief millisecond I allow my eyes to take them in.

“I didn’t hear you come in,” she says, laughing.

If she’s self-conscious about being in only my shirt, she doesn’t show it, so I try not to act rocked by it either. She tosses something in the sink, and I glance over, my eyes catching on the scrambled eggs with mushrooms and cheese on the stove.

“I thought maybe I could say thank you by making you breakfast,” she says.

“You’ve said thank you plenty.”

“Oh, well. I don’t think so.” She smiles.

“How is—” I wave my hand toward her upper half.

She makes a face. “It’s pretty painful…and kinda awful to look at.”

“I should’ve insisted on taking you to the hospital last night.”

She shakes her head. “I’ll be okay. I’m a bit klutzy, but Ihategoing to the doctor. Growing up, we usually always did home remedies anyway, and I guess that stuck. I’ll just keep doing the cream and making sure it’s clean. Hopefully it won’t scar, but if it does, I’ll have a good story to tell, right?” She lifts a shoulder, grinning.

I just stare at her, unsure of what to even say.

She turns back to the stove and turns the heat off. “I hope you like mushrooms and cheese in your eggs.”

I nod. “I do. Thank you.”

She beams. “You’re welcome. I made a fresh pot of coffee too…and boiled water for tea. I hope you don’t mind that I dug into your pantry. English Breakfast is myfavorite.”

“That’s fine,” I mutter.

She takes two plates down and hands me one, dishing a pile of eggs on hers. “I’m going to eat quickly and get some clothes from the RV…so I can see about Dolly.”

“She looked good this morning. I waited to feed her…wasn’t sure when she usually eats, but she looked comfortable.”

“You checked on her?” She gapes at me and I nod.

“That okay?”

“Of course. I just can’t believe you…I’m not used to—” She smiles. “Thank you.”

I nod again.

She glances at the clock and makes another face. She’s like watching an animated movie, constant movement and dramatic expressions. I can’t take my eyes off of her…but I force myself to, dishing up some eggs.

“She’s normally eating in about fifteen minutes, but Ithink she’ll be okay if I’m a little later today. She’s probably still exhausted from the drive. Thanks for checking on her.”

“No problem.”

She pours hot water over her tea bag, while I get my coffee.

“Can you believe I’m getting close to boiling water again so soon?” She laughs. “Gotta get back on that horse.”

“How about I carry that to the island…or table,” I say, motioning for her to go ahead while I pick up her mug.

“Either place is fine by me,” she says. “There’s a beautiful view everywhere I look…although the view out those windows is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.”

I bite back my proud smile and move toward the table near the floor-to-ceiling windows. It’s one of my favorite places in the house. The snow-capped mountains are majestic, and the snow flocking all the trees is spectacular. The green shows through the fir and spruce and pine, and the barren branches of the aspen are their own kind of beautiful in the winter. I love it through every season though.
