SATAN’S WHISPERS

CALLUM

“You late for a wedding?” I don’t normally ask questions that aren’t my business, but I want to know what kind of timeframe we’re dealing with here.

And an emu?

Last thing I expected to see out here tonight is a bride and an emu.

It’s a damn good thing Delphine and Ireneare put up for the night. I have a large herd of dairy cows and a few goats, but my goat Delphine and Irene the cow defy expectations.

They think they run the joint.

The way this emu keeps edging in front of Ruby, looking ready to peck me to death, I’d say she might be cut from the same cloth.

Out in the dark, it’s hard to tell how old Pierre’s niece is. She’s tall but sounds young, and given her attire, she’s not a child. I was shocked to pull up and see this rig out here. Pierre just said she was stuck on my property.

He left a helluva lot out.

I sure as hell wouldn’t want my sister stuck out here at night.

“No, no wedding.” Ruby holds her hand out and I shake it, eyeing the emu carefully as she straightens to her full height.

She sniffs my hand and stares at me with her beady eyes. It’s only now that I realize that weird rhythmic sound is coming from the bird.

Ruby hums. “I think she likes you! Normally, she doesn’t allow men to get near me.”

I mutterthanks for the warningunder my breath.

Ruby shivers while her hand is still in mine, and I frown as I look her over from head to toe.

Some sheer wedding ensemble that can’t be very warm. The hell?

“What?” she asks.

I clear my throat. Didn’t mean for that growl to actually come out.

“Truck’s warm,” I say. “Hop inside. I’ll work on this.”

“My RV’s not starting,” she says through chattering teeth. “And I’m okay. I’ll just stay here with Dolly. She’s scared.”

I take off my coat and hand it to her and she tries toprotest, but I give her a look and she puts her arms through the sleeves as quickly as she can while fighting with a wayward veil. A deep sigh comes out as she lifts the collar as high as it’ll go.

“This is such a nice coat,” she says. “Thank you. Much better.”

“Hmm,” I mutter, turning back to look at her when she snorts.

She lifts a shoulder. “You sure are a grumbly thing.”

My eyes narrow on her. “Grumblything?”

“Grumbly bear,” she adds.

I huff and turn back to the task at hand. Her laugh bites through the cold and I shake my head. No damn time for this nonsense, especially if she’s gonna keep freezing her ass off next to that bird.

I don’t waste too much time trying to start her RV, the thing’s dead like she said. Instead, I walk back to where she’s huddled next to her emu and point toward my place.

“I’ll drive you to a hotel. The emu will be fine in my barn. I’ll work on this in the morning.” I point to her RV.
