My stomach hollows out, dick standing at attention despite the heaviness of my thoughts.

Felicity stands upright and tugs the bottom of her fitted ski jacket, her blonde waves cascading over her shoulders and downher back. She stands out like technicolor in a black-and-white film.

“You guys are ready bright and early,” she says.

“We’re heading to Happy Cow. Wanna come?” Owen asks, his cheeks rosy from the cold.

“Sure. I don’t know what that is, but it sounds fun,” she says.

“I love their donuts best, but they’ve got tons of other things too,” Owen says.

He bounces around her like he’s already on a sugar high.

“We can bring something back for you if you were about to exercise,” I say. “It’s still almost an hour and a half before Owen has to leave for school, so spend the time doing whatever you’d like before you’re on the clock.”

She waves her hand. “I can work out while Owen’s at school. Now I’m curious about Happy Cow. That sounds like a place I’ll like.” She grins at Owen and slaps his hand when he comes over to give her a high five.

Lar and Mar are just opening when we walk inside. Mar’s eyes sparkle when she sees us and then they widen when she notices Felicity.

“I don’t know the last time I’ve seen you on a Monday,” Mar says, smiling at me. “Must be a special occasion. Who’s this?”

“This is Felicity Shaw. Felicity, this is Mar and her husband Lar.”

“Nice to meet you,” Felicity says.

“Hi, Felicity,” Lar says, waving from the door of the kitchen.

“It’s so nice to meet you, Felicity.” Mar’s smile just keeps growing as she looks back and forth between the two of us.

I knew this was a bad idea.

“Felicity will be helping out with Owen, so make sure these two kiddos are taken care of if they ever come in without me, okay, Mar?” I say.

Felicity’s head turns toward me, but I don’t look at her. Mar clucks her tongue against her teeth.

“I sure will. But this beautiful woman in front of me is no kiddo, Sutton Landmark, I’ll tell you that,” Mar says, laughing as she taps the top of the counter.

Felicity laughs. Great. Everyone in this town is going to throw it in my face that I have a beautiful woman working for me. What the hell was I thinking?

She really was the best option,I remind myself.

“Would you like your usual, Owen?” Mar asks.

“Yes, please.” He nods.

Mar hands Owen a donut with sprinkles and turns to Felicity.

“Do you see anything that suits your fancy, Felicity?” she asks.

“It all looks so good,” Felicity says. “Owen says your donuts are the best, and I think I’ll try that one right there.” She points it out.

“Ah yes, the maple glazed,” Mar says. “Anything else?”

“And a large flat white,” Felicity adds.

Mar’s eyes twinkle when she looks at me. “Why, that’s exactly whatyoualways order, Sutton. How ‘bout that?”

“How ‘bout that?” I repeat. “I think I’ll mix it up today and have a bear claw.”
