I watch Pappy walk away as Cecil rings up my groceries and wish I had more time with him. The pain that crossed over hisface when he talked about his wife makes me sad and I wonder how long she’s been gone.
“Looks like you’ve got some good meals planned,” Cecil says, surprising me with the warmth in his voice. “That Sutton’s always been a good egg. Helped raise his brothers and sister when their parents died and then had the worst luck of it with that wife of his.” He lifts a hand to emphasize his next words. “Not a fan of divorce, but even I was glad when they parted ways.” He shakes his head, getting back to work as he scoffs under his breath. “Best thing to ever happen was the day she left, if you ask me.”
I wait with bated breath, half guilty that I’m hearing this information, yet not wanting to miss any of it.
He meets my eyes and nods firmly. “You’ll be good for them,” he says, as if he’s giving his stamp of approval.
“Thank you,” I finally say.
He doesn’t say another word, obviously done sharing, and when I thank him again once the last bag is placed in the cart, he simply nods and glances at the next person who steps up to the counter.
When I’ve got the groceries in the car, I pull out my phone and am surprised to find a slew of texts. While I’m waiting for the car to warm up, I open the one from Sutton.
Sutton
If everything goes as planned, I should be home by 5:30.
All business. Okay. I keep the same tone in my text back to him.
I’ll have dinner ready by 6.
There’s a text from Weston too.
Weston
Ready to come home yet?
Nope. I love it here!
Weston
I had a feeling you would.
I almost text him about a crazy idea I had last night. Not sure if it’s too late to pull it off, but I’ll still ask him about it later.
The group thread from the girls is definitely chattier than Sutton’s.

Dakota is still talking about how pretty you are. She hopes her hair is as pretty as yours when she grows up.

My aunt and her wife are dying to meet you now too. They were with me when we saw Lar and Mar at Happy Cow this morning—you guys had apparently just left—and L & M talked you up good. They are FANS. And so are we, if you can’t tell. Too much? Are we scaring you yet?

OMG. Callum and I were in Happy Cow this morning too! Yes. L & M were on a Felicity high! I’m so bummed we missed you guys. I’m the newbie to Landmark Mountain compared to everyone else, but you’ll find it’s such a welcoming place…especially this family.
