“Will you be eating with us this evening?” I grab plates to set the table but wait to see how many.

She pauses at the oven and turns to look at me. I’ve missed her this week, missed the ease between us.

“Uh, I’m not—” she says, the doorbell cutting her off.

I frown, setting the plates on the counter. “Were we expecting someone tonight?”

“No, I don’t think so,” Felicity says.

When I head to the front door and open it, I’m shocked to see Gwyneth. Blake and Camila must have told her where I live because I’ve never invited her here. But I’m not complaining. Maybe this is exactly what I needed, someone to distract me from all these thoughts of Felicity.

“Gwyneth, hello!” We move to hug each other and I lean back, smiling at her. “I didn’t know you were in town.”

“I’ve only been here since this morning. I should’ve called first, but I thought I’d surprise you instead. I hope that’s okay.”

“Sure. It’s good to see you,” I tell her.

She presses her hand against my chest and grins. “I’m glad you feel that way…because I’ve been thinking about this for a while now.”

“This?” I echo.

Her hands land in my hair and she tugs it, her mouth on mine before I’ve even had time to process what’s happening.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

VYING FOR CONTENTION

FELICITY

When Sutton doesn’t come back right away, Owen grabs my hand and tugs me toward the front door to see who’s there. When we round the corner, it’s just in time to see a woman dig her hands through Sutton’s hair and pull him down to kissher. I think my mouth drops before I remember little eyes are watching, so I try to back us out of the room.

Owen’s feet remain firmly planted.

He clears his throat and lets go of my hand long enough to cross his arms, just as Sutton takes a step back and starts to say something to the woman. But then the throat-clearing registers and he turns to look at us, an unreadable expression on his face. I can’t begin to imagine what my face must look like, but since Weston says I have no poker face, I can only imagine it’s not hiding anything. I wish the floor could swallow me up, but since that’s not possible, I do the next best thing and turn, lifting my hand up in a wave.

“Sorry to interrupt,” I say over my shoulder, as I walk out of the room.

When I’ve reached the kitchen, I hold onto the counter as I will my heart to calm down.

You were trying to create distance for a reason. You knew you needed to take a step back.

It all sounds reasonable in theory, but the way my stomach is turning over seeing Sutton lip-locked with a beautiful woman is another story.

You have no right to feel this way. You haven’t known the man for long, and what you do know has given you no reason to believe he’s interested. This kiss just confirms that.

Again, reasonable in theory, but it’s like my heart is conferring with my stomach and they’re in cahoots. I’ve lost my appetite, and that never happens. The baked spaghetti with a combo of marinara and alfredo sauces that I prepared for tonight is freaking delicious, and I can’t even consider eating it right now.

He is your boss. Nothing more.

I get the ice for the glasses and find my purse on the desk just as Sutton walks back with Owen and the woman. She gives me afriendly but assessing smile, and I try to only look friendly as I smile back at her, but I probably fail.

“Felicity, this is Gwyneth Daly.”

My heart thrums against my rib cage, hearing her name. This is the woman he had dinner with when she was visiting last time…the one I just knew he’d slept with. After seeing that kiss, I’d say my intuition was hella on point.

I can barely hear Sutton saying, “Gwyneth, this is Owen’s nanny, Felicity.”

“Oh, you’re the nanny. That’s great,” she says, her smile widening. “It’s nice to meet you. What smells so good in here?”
