Are they seeing each other?

I don’t know why the thought crosses my mind at all. It doesn’t matter if Dr. Banks is seeing someone, even itisone of Connor’s teachers.

“Okay. Have fun.”

Have fun? He is not your friend.

I’m so stupid.

He chuckles. “I don’t think talking about my son failing math is going to be all that fun. Mr. Witsome is a bit of a cooky old man, too.”

“Oh.” Why does that make my chest lighter?

For some reason, my body doesn’t serve to move me out of Dr. Banks’s way, and as he makes his way toward the door, he stops close enough to me that I can smell his cologne. It draws me in, and my feet feel even more glued to the floor.

I close my eyes and take a deep breath, taking his scent in. Committing it to memory.

“Melody.” His voice takes on a raspy tone I’ve only heard in my alone time and my eyes jerk open. He leans forward, his close presence setting my core on fire. “I need to get to the door.”

I blink a couple of times, his eyes boring into mine. “Right... Yeah. I’m so sorry.” I stumble backward, and suddenly, I’m going down when my feet trip over each other.

“Whoa!” Dr. Banks’s arm slides around my waist, pulling me upward.

My chest presses against his, and all I can feel is his rock-hard body against mine.

And I hearhisbreath hitch.

“I-I-I’m...” I can’t get the words out as I tilt my head back to look up at him, his eyes darkened with an emotion I’ve never before seen in a man’s eyes. Not directed at me, at least.

“Are you alright?” His voice is strained as he drags his hand along my lower back, removing it from me slowly but surely.

I feel the loss of his touch but nod. “I’m fine. Just... Clumsy.”

He slides past me then, his lower abdomen brushing mine—but only barely. “I’ll see you after lunch,Ms. Everett.” The name comes from his mouth in a heavy tone, hanging in my mind long after he disappears from the office.

Was that just me?

Or did he have a reaction tomycloseness, too?

“What’s with you today?” Fran asks me, taking a bite of her chicken sandwich.

“Nothing,” I answer, taking a bite of my homemade peanut butter and jelly on wheat bread.

I can’t afford to eat lunch from one of the restaurants in the student union food court like Fran, but I don’t mind meeting her for lunch whenever I can. I’ve missed her.

“Okay, youdefinitelylook like something is up, girl. I can see it all over your face.” She gives me a smirk. “Did you get laid?”

“What? I don’t even… What makes you say that?”

“Um, the way your face has been flushed since you walked in here today. It’s so obvious that something is going on. Or maybe it’s just that time of the month. My hormones get wacky then, too. Funny how that works.” She laughs, popping a fry into her mouth.

“Well, I didnotget laid.” And I don’t mean just now. “I haven’t—” I shake my head.

This is not something that anyone needs to know.

“Wait...” Her voice trails off, and I know I gave my deepest darkest secret away. “You’re a...virgin?”
