“Are you sure she isn’t going to double cross us the first chance she gets?” His leg stretches out in front of him. The bullet wound is almost fully healed, but he still isn’t strong enough for combat yet.

“She wants out of this shithole as much as we do. I’m not saying we should trust her with our deepest, darkest secrets, but I have a good feeling about her.” Well, I did entrust her with a huge one, but I don’t think she would have helped us otherwise. The knowledge that my fated mate is human seems to have been enough to convince her.

“Okay, but if she gets us all killed, I’m going to haunt you in the afterlife.”

“No one’s gonna die.” I grin. “I mean, except for any idiot who gets in our way.” Lying on my stomach, I bask in the warmth of the sun on my back and the way the asphalt heats my scales below me.

Danel does the same, sighing contentedly at the warmth.

“Hey, lazy asses,” a guard snaps. “If you’re gonna nap on the ground, we might as well send you back to your cells.”

I pick up my head and make eye contact with Officer Dickwad. “I thought this was supposed to be free time.”

“There’s no such thing as free time here. You either exercise the way you’re supposed to, or you go back to your cell and nap like the pampered princesses you are.”

“I’m giving this resort one star. You, Garet?”

I raise my eyebrows. “One star? That’s high, even for this place.”

Irritated, the guards haul us to our feet and push us back to our cells. I feel someone bump into me as we walk and catch a glimpse of Brigid pushing her trashcan down the hall. A small piece of paper had been pressed into my hand. It takes all my restraint not to read it in front of them.

Danel shoots me a questioning look and I shake my head.Later.

When I get back to my cell, I wait until I no longer hear footsteps coming down the hall and then open the note.

Found him. Well enough to travel. Talk later.

I grin. Brigid, how could I ever doubt you? I flush the note down the toilet and lie on the bed.

The waiting stretches for hours, and in that time, my mind travels to where it normally goes without anything to occupy it:Tania. I wonder what she’s doing right now. I like to think she’s working on the latest and greatest design for…

For something.

I know nothing about fashion. Shit. When I get free, I have to study up. I can’t sound like a total idiot around her colleagues.

It’s not my thing—I go for usefulness over style most of the time—but if this is the world she lives in, then I need to at least make an effort to understand it. For the sake of my pride if nothing else.

Finally, Brigid approaches my cell with her mop in hand. I get to my feet and search for any listening ears before going up to her.

“You found him?” I ask.

She nods. “The bad news is that he’s deep in maximum-security and far from your or your brother’s cells.”

“And the good news?” I ask, not optimistic that there is any.

“He’s right next to the garbage room.”

I blink. “How is that good news?”

She rolls her eyes as though I’m particularly dense. “Well, for one, it stinks, so no one goes down there unless they have to. It’s not very carefully guarded because no one likes trash room duty. Two, every week, trucks come in to collect whatever can’t be incinerated or recycled.”

“So, if we can make it down there and get him free, we’ll have an escape route and vehicle.”

She smirks. “Brains and looks. No wonder I like you.”

“Hey, I’m taken. Destiny said so. But my brother isn’t.”

She shakes her head. “If I was twenty years younger, maybe. But we’ve got bigger problems to solve first.”
