“Any time.” He replies. “And I believe you that you would do anything for her. I mean, you kidnapped her father so that she could confront him. Not very many people would go that far for the one they claim to love. So, I guess what I'mtrying to say is thank you.”

“You are thanking me for kidnapping you?”

“Well yes. I’m thanking you for what you will do for my daughter.”

I nod.

In the car I message the address to Rei and tell her that I'mon my way there right now. She confirms she will be there as well and that I should wait outside for her.

I drive toward the address, my hands gripped around the steering wheel. I don't know the location; I don't know what to expect. All I know is that I have to get there, and the only person I trust with Kalo’s life is Rei.

While I'mdriving, Seraphina’s father’s words are in my thoughts.

End the war between Hong Kong and New York. You are the boss now, you have the power.

He is right. Seraphina will never be safe until I do that. And I'min think power to orchestrate it. I have connections on both sides. My business is on both sides of the war. I could have called for help, from my cousin especially, but I don’t trust anyone with this. I don’t even know who has him yet.

I pull the car to the side of the road and locate my gun and Kevlar. Getting ready for what I'msure will not be a simple mission. But at least they don't know we are coming, and with a smaller team, we can move fast.

I'll need to think about it and figure out a way to do that for her.

Right now, though, I need to focus.

Kalo needs me, and I know where he is.

Outside the building, Rei steps toward me, seeming to appear out of nowhere.

I nod at her, and she steps to my side, her sword in one hand and her handgun in the other.

“Ambidextrous?” I ask.

“And many other things,” she replies with a grin.

Both of us know that this is not a quiet operation. We have to go hard and fast.

I kick the old wooden door with one solid strike of my boot.

It splinters and falls aside.

Rei rushes in, as silent as the wind. She is already up the stairs before I have set foot on the bottom one.

She peeks over the railing, a floor above me.

“Eight men.” She whispers.

I take the stairs three at a time and stand beside her, our bodies against the wall.

With one slight nod of her head, I know we are going in.

We storm through the door, opening fire.

Someone screams as a bullet shatters their kneecap. Rei rolls across the floor and lands catlike on her feet, then shoots the screaming man through the skull.

I fire two shots, and two bodies fall to the floor.

Another man drops to my left. Rei moves along the back wall, ducking as some fires toward her. I shoot him in the throat, and blood fountains out of him.

A man turns toward me, lifting his gun. I freeze, knowing I won’t be able to shoot him first, but then a blade pierces from behind him, pushing out between his ribs, right through his heart.
