“He would like to take you to dinner tomorrow night. Would you be willing to meet with him?”

She shifts in my arms for a moment, biting her bottom lip.

“I have been wanting to speak with him for quite a while already. I didn’t think it would be in person. I have been so nervous just to phone him, but I know we need to speak. I want to have dinner with him. It’s time.”

“Well then, I'llmake the arrangements and book a table for the two of you at the Emerald Raven for tomorrow night. It will be on my account there, and I'll make sure I don’t have any plans myself, just in case you need me for anything.”

“Thank you, Antonio.” Her eyes look distant, lost in thought.

“Do you want to call him to confirm? Or would you like me to pass on the reservation information?”

“Please pass on the information on my behalf. I’ll speak to him in person tomorrow night.”

Seraphina

All day, I havebeen feeling wound with nerves for tonight’s dinner with ah gung.

Antonio sent me out to buy a new dress, even though I didn’t need one. I think he was trying to help me take my mind off everything. And I admit it was fun doing a bit of shopping.

Ah gung is used to seeing me dressed in jeans or slacks and with my hair pulled back. He is not familiar with the version of me I see standing in front of the tall hotel mirror.

I stare at my reflection, almost unable to recognize myself. The long pale pink dress makes my skin look more tanned than usual. My eyes are shimmering with a soft touch of gold makeup, and my long dark hair is falling over my shoulder in glossy curls. The gold high heels complement the dress and make me look sophisticated and elegant.

“You look incredible, little bird,” Antonio says, handing me my gold clutch purse.

His hand trails down my back, settling on the arch above my butt. My skin heats underneath his touch. “If you were wearing this out to meet anyone else, I might be feeling jealous.” He smiles, the dimples in his cheeks catching my eyes in the mirror's reflection.

“You? Jealous? What a silly idea.”

“Why would that be silly?”

“Because there is not a soul on this planet that can steal my attention from you.” I grin.

He turns me away from the mirror toward him, and his hands drift over my waist.

“Perhaps I should stay here with you?” I whisper.

“There will be plenty of time for us to play after your dinner.”

I sigh. “Well, I guess I'm ready,” I say with a nervous knot in my stomach.

“Then let me drive you there.”

He takes my hand and leads me out of the penthouse to the car, and with an anxious heartbeat, I prepare myself to see ah gung.

When I step into the restaurant alone, I spot ah gung right away. He is standing so poised, with such self-control, at the bar. His presence is hard to miss as he looks out of place in New York. But he looks confident and calm.

“Ah gung,” I say, walking toward him.

He looks at me, confused for a second. “Seraphina?” he asks in shock.

I laugh as I wrap my arms around him and pull him into a hug.

“Seraphina, my girl, you look so different.” His eyes are wide with shock. “For a moment, I could have sworn it was your mother walking toward me,” he whispers.

“My dad also told me I look just like her.”
