When I peek into the kitchen, I find her there, bending over the stove next to the chef.

“Little bird,” I say when I am right behind her, and she jumps and screams.

She spins around and punches me in the arm. “Antonio, you know you may not sneak up on me like that.”

I chuckle, and she grins up at me when I pull her into my arms and kiss her.

“Where is my surprise, then?”

She pushes me away, shaking her head. “You are terrible. You still have to wait. I was making us a roast, but I think I messed it up a bit and had to call Leonard back into the kitchen after I gave him the night off.”

“You were making a roast?” I peek over her at the dish the chef is pulling out of the oven.

“Mrs. Aoi, this looks perfect. I don’t know what you were worried about.” He smiles, placing the meat on a board to rest.

“The roast looks amazing, my love. Now, can I know what my surprise is?”

She rolls her eyes and throws her head back. “Out. You, out of the kitchen. Put your things down, freshen up, do whatever, just get out of the kitchen.”

“But-”

“Antonio,” she grins and tilts her head with her brows raised in warning.

I put my hands up, “Alright, alright, I am leaving. But, honestly, that smells amazing. And I am starving. Don’t make me wait fordinner as long as you are making me wait to find out what my surprise is.”

I back out of the kitchen, staring at her ass as she bends over to pull the roasted vegetables out of the oven as well. “Mm,” I mutter with a sly look on my face.

I head upstairs to change out of my work clothes into something more comfortable.

I slip on a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt, then freshen up and head back down to the dining room, where I can hear her humming.

When I walk in, I am greeted by a beautiful scene.

My gorgeous wife is leaning over the table to light the last candle. The plates are laid out with sparkling water, champagne, thefancycutleryas Seraphina likes to call it, even though, for the life of me, I can’t tell the difference between that cutlery and our other cutlery.

“Sit, sit, my love,” she says, holding my chair out for me.

“Oh, well, this is different, isn’t it?” I remark, sitting down in front of plates. Then, on a whim, I check under the table.

“What are you doing?” she asks, confused. “Were you looking for your surprise?” She packs up, laughing.

I grab her around the waist and pull her onto my lap.

“That’s it. I am not letting you go until you tell me you have tortured me enough.”

She rolls her eyes at me again. “Ok. You can have your surprise now, then,” she grins.

She pushes off my lap and runs to the other side of the room to grab a box off the mantle place. Then she runs back to me and climbs back onto my lap. She sits with her legs sideways over me, so that she can watch my face. I wrap one arm around her back.

She hands me the small box.

I grin, wondering again what it might be this time.

She wraps her arm around my neck and watches me while I open it.

I stare down into the box. She doesn't say a word, and I don’t say a word. My jaw drops open.

“Is it," I stammer.
