Then he lifts me to my feet and goes through to the room to fetch his jacket.

“I don’t think I am dressed properly,” I say, looking down at my jeans.

“DO you want to put on a dress?”

“I have one here that I borrowed from my friend.”

“You don’t own dresses?” he asks, surprised.

I shrug. “Not really.”

“That will not do. Tomorrow we are going shopping for you. We will find you the most beautiful dresses.”

I shake my head, grinning, as I walk through to the bedroom to change. I slip Maddy’s short black dress over my body. Looking in the mirror, I feel pretty. I slide the high heels onto my feet and grab a small clutch, all belonging to Maddy, all on a long-term loan for my New York adventure. She insisted I take it with me, and I am glad that she did.

When I step out of the room, Antonio’s eyes light with a hungry fire. “Fuck, you look so sexy. Maybe we don’t need to eat. Maybe we should just stay home so that I can eat you.”

I smile. “I might be a little tender right now.”

He chuckles. “Yes, I would imagine so.”

The restaurant is breathtaking. The views across the city at night are magical and the romantic atmosphere is making me lean closer and closer to Antonio.

Soft candlelight flickers across our table, playing in his eyes, making them bright and dangerous. He sips the wine he has ordered for us, tasting it. Then he nods to the waiter, confirming that he can pour a glass for each of us.

I glance over the menu, unsure what I feel like eating, lost in my thoughts again.

I am so happy that Antonio and I feel the same way about each other, and I am excited to be here with him, but honestly, my heart is so heavy with shock after seeing my father yesterday.

Everything in my world has been spun around and flipped upside down.

I bite at my lip as anxiety increases.

“What do you feel like eating, little bird?”

“Um, I don’t know.”

He reaches out and places his hand over mine. “Do you want me to order for you?”

“Yes, please,” I say, relieved.

Antonio orders us a seafood platter, and it sounds perfect.

I sit staring out of the window, watching the lights of the buildings around us and below us as they glitter against the dark backdrop of the night sky.

“Seraphina, where are your thoughts right now? You seem very far away from me.”

“I’m sorry. I know I am being distant. It’s just everything, you know.”

“With us?”

“No, that is the one thing that is bringing me peace. No, it's everything with my father. I can’t believe he is alive.”

Antonio nods, his fingers massaging my thigh.

I clamp my teeth. Should I dare to tell him what I am thinking about?

Now that I have found love for the first time in my life, do I tell him who I am? Do I risk having him pull away from me because of my honesty?
