The attorney met with me yesterday to hand me the keys to my father’s mansion, along with a thick folder containing some documents, as well as letters from my father, addressed to me.

The housekeepers are still living there and taking care of the place, but everyone, well, those who are on my side, is telling me it's time to move in.

I think my moving into the mansion will solidify everything for the family. Things are up in the air for them as much as it's for me with this massive changeover.

Lucas has been sending messages here and there to let me know he is still not happy. He has been making it clear, even when he is trying to be subtle, that I'm not fit for the position.

Arton and two others are to support me.

So, I received the keys yesterday, and today, I want to head over and take a proper look around. I mentioned to Arton that I want my father's belongings moved to storage before I move in. However, he insisted I take the time to look through them first, in case there's anything that should remain in the house. I feel petty, but I believe a fresh start would be a good idea.

Even I like my father’s taste in furniture and art, I need to establish my dominance in this family. And that mansion is a meeting ground, a backbone of family events, and a symbol of the person running everything. It needs to reflect on me.

Then, something else that is eating at me is that Kalo is still missing.

I have hired a private detective here in New York to look into it, but so far, the detective has found nothing. I need to act as though nothing is bothering me, but, It's eating me alive.

I pick up the keys to the mansion from the hotel kitchen counter. I slip my phone into my pocket and grab the keys to the car I have rented.

It's time to go to my father’s home. My stomach flutters at the thought of it. I'm about to walk into his space. A space filled with his life, every corner representing who he was as a man.

The hallways he walked down with my mother. Their home.

If I hadn’t been sent away, I would have grown up in that home.

My jaw muscles flex, and I take a deep breath. It's time to go.

Driving down the streets of New York, I spot a dark gray car tailing me. They are not even trying to be subtle about it. I turn random corners, and they follow. I pull my Glock out, placing it on my lap, ready for whatever is about to happen.

It could be anyone—my family, harboring bitterness and plotting to get rid of me; or, hell, it could even involve Seraphina.

The bottom line is that the best way to deal with whoever it's, and whatever they want, so to ask them.

So I pull the car into an alley, big enough to maneuver in and with an open end on the other side in case I need to make a getaway.

The gray car follows me in and parks a little behind me.

I pause a moment and then climb out of my car. I stand leaning against it, waiting. Inside, I'm alert, tense, and ready - but on the outside, I appear casual and calm.

A figure steps out, hooded, keeping their face low.

I notice they are petite, narrow-shouldered, and very feminine in the way they move.

My eyes narrow.

Then she looks up at me, pulling the hood off her head. She turns to look behind her for a moment, checking to see if anyone else is cornering her in. She braids her long dark hair in a silky plat down her back. Beneath her black coat, I see the outline of a small sword sitting along her spine.

She looks at me.

“Antonio.”

Her features tell me who she is.

“You must be Kalo’s friend,” I say with a sigh of relief.

“Rei.”

“Nice to meet you, Rei.”
