“Okay, I’m on it,” Roberson said.

“You’re sending someone after him?”

“I said I’m on it.”

“Where is he? I’ll go.”

“Hang up now, Abney.”

Jack cut the phone, cursing Roberson. The man was right, though. This wasn’t Jack’s case, but Gray was out there, in danger, and Jack couldn’t stand that he wasn’t the one who had Gray’s back.

“Where did Gray say he was going?” he asked Mason.

Mason frowned. “I’m not sure. What’s wrong?”

“The murder, it was a rival faction, not an inside job, and the guys know what Gray and Roberson were planning. When Gray goes to question them, they’ll be ready for him.”

“Fuck.” Mason squeezed his eyes shut as he tried to remember. “He didn’t say anything specific to me, just that he’d be working and hoped he’d get done close to when his shift was supposed to end. He did take a call though, right before he left. He was talking about a guy named Morales.”

“Joey Morales. They’ve been investigating him.”

“The guy that runs the bar on Pembroke Avenue that everyone knows is a whorehouse?”

Jack nodded. “Yeah. That’s him. I’d forgotten about that place. It would be closed during the day and quiet.” He grabbed his keys.

“What are you doing?”

“Going after Gray.”

Mason shook his head. “You don’t know that’s where he’s gone.”

“No, but it’s a good place to start.”

“Roberson will find him.”

“Do you want to bet his life on that?”

Mason grabbed his arm. “Your life will be in danger too if you go.”

Jack pulled free and headed for the door. There was no way in hell he was leaving Gray out there on his own.

Mason moved between him and the door.

“Please don’t try to stop me. I…I just…” Tears burned behind Jack’s eyes. “I know I shouldn’t go, but I have to. I have to be sure someone is there for him.”

“Then I’m coming with you.”

“No.”

“I love him and I love you. Someone has to keep you from doing something crazy, Jack.”

Time was running out for Gray. They couldn’t stand there arguing. “Fine. Come on.”

When they turned onto Pembroke Avenue, Mason pointed to a beat-up Jeep Cherokee parked illegally with two tires on the sidewalk. “Isn’t that the car Gray’s been using?”

“Yes,” Jack said. His heart slammed against this chest. There was no sign of any other cops. Who had Roberson sent? Anyone? Or was Gray hanging in the wind?

Jack parked behind Gray’s vehicle. He leaned across the seat and kissed Mason. “Stay in the car.”
