“No, I just…there he is.” Was Andy blushing?

Henry was coming down the stairs to the lobby. Jack held up a finger indicating that Henry should wait for him.

“Thanks for the recommendation,” he said to Andy, not pushing for more information. He figured he could ask Henry what was going on.

“Sure. I’m glad I’ll get to work with you more, and I do hope you’ll still be around here as often as you can.”

“I will. I’ll be here for Henry whenever he needs me, and the cooking class has several weeks left.”

“Good. You really do deserve this promotion.”

Jack started to protest, but he swallowed the words. He had to let others believe in him. At least that’s what his counselor kept telling him. “Thanks.”

Jack left the office and crossed the lobby to join Henry. “I talked to my lieutenant this morning.”

“And?”

“As soon as I sign the official paperwork, I’ll be a member of the Youth Task Force.”

“That’s fantastic.” Henry pulled Jack into a tight hug. But when he pulled away, he didn’t look excited anymore. He looked crushed.

“What’s wrong?”

“I guess once you’re back at work you won’t have time to hang out with me.”

Jack wanted to reassure him, but he had to be honest. “I will still be here for you. I won’t have as much time, but if you need me, I will do everything I can to come right away. If I can’t, I’ll send Mason or Gray or someone else I trust. I won’t ever abandon you.”

Henry nodded. “Thanks.”

Jack sighed. “I don’t like change. That’s why I resisted Gray applying for a detective position and coming out, but what got me through those changes was having people who cared for me. Now you have that too. I can’t replace your parents, but I’m here for you, whenever you need me.”

Henry smiled. “Thanks. Would you like to drive me to work?”

Jack’s mouth dropped open. “You got the job?”

“I did.”

This time Jack was the one who grabbed Henry for a hug.

Jack was pondering dinner options when Gray and Mason walked in the door together. He’d expected to see Mason soon, but he’d assumed Gray would be at work for hours. “What are you doing here?” he asked Gray.

“That’s not the greeting I was hoping for,” Gray said, scowling.

Heat filled Jack’s face. “Sorry. I?—”

He didn’t finish his sentence, because Gray walked across the room, grabbed him by the shoulders, and kissed him like his life depended on it. Gray feasted on his lip, pushed his tongue in to tangle with Jack’s, and held him so tight he couldn’t move. Mason grabbed Jack’s hips, trapping him between them. He lifted Jack’s shirt and pushed his hands under the fabric, and the heat of his touch had Jack groaning into Gray’s mouth. Jack forgot all about dinner, about his new job, about everything but these two men.

When Gray finally released him, Jack tried to speak, but only a whimper came out. Gray kissed and nibbled and sucked Jack’sneck, and Jack thrust back against Mason, rubbing against his erection, which was nestled against Jack’s ass.

Finally, he found the breath to speak. “We’re celebrating now?”

“Fuck yeah,” Gray responded.

“I…um…I was going to make a cake.”

“Later,” Gray growled.
