Hakoa’s eyebrows furrowed when I stopped dancing. I smiled knowingly at him. Hakoa lifted his head, looking out through the people before his eyes locked on someone behind me. I could feel him standing just outside the crowd as they continued to move around us.

I wrapped my arms around Hakoa, his arms wrapped around me in return. “Thank you for dancing with me,” I said as I released him.

He bowed his head and returned to the dancing.

I turned on my heel. Ryker’s silver eyes shone in the starlight, standing out against the crowd. I used them as a guide through the swarm of dancers.

My mate.

Emerging from the crowd, Ryker’s eyes swept up and down my body. He wore all black, his shirt unbuttoned, revealing his tattooed chest and torso. His shaggy hair was unstyled and swept to the side, just touching the tops of his brows. His eyes hungrilytrailed over me, making my skin flush under his stare. Just a look from him had me hot and wanting.

My tongue swept across my lower lip as I took him in with just as much hunger and desire in my eyes. Gods, I wanted him.

He gave me a knowing look and gripped my hips, pulling me against him. His nose grazed up the length of mine and I shivered.

“Do you like the color?” I gazed up at him from underneath my lashes.

“Silver.” His voice was thick and husky.

I placed my hands on his chest and lifted to my toes to whisper against his ear. “It goes with your eyes. A match to my mate.”

A low growl rumbled in his chest, and his hands tightened on my hips when I kissed just below his ear. A sound greater than any music.

“Dance with me, shadow.” I dropped back down to my heels.

He brushed his hand down my hair and fiddled with the feather braided into it, looking at it curiously before meeting my gaze. “Always.”

He grabbed my hand and led me into the crowd behind him. When he stopped, he turned around to face me, placed his hand on my lower back and pulled me in close against his body. My hands were up behind his neck, and his other hand gripped my waist. He rested his forehead against mine.

We swayed and dipped to the beat. The music never stopped. The beating of the drums would shift and transition smoothly in a constant rhythm, like the beats of a heart. I became lost in his eyes.

Somehow, in the middle of all of those people, it was just the two of us. Our bodies, the music, the darkness and the stars above. The world fell away and nothing else existed.

“Do you know the legend of the moons?” he asked softly.

I shook my head.

“They’re lovers. It is said that they’re Spirits that loved each other so much but couldn’t be together. They wanted to live in peace among the stars forever so they became the moons. Always with each other in the skies and gracing us with their light to guide us.” He kissed the tip of my nose and I blushed. “They were the first mates, and they take one night a year to love each other away from the world.”

“Like we’re doing now,” I whispered.

“Only I’ll give you every night, every day. Until time itself comes to an end.”

The dynamic in the air changed. My heart was so full, so free.

Ryker spun me around so my back was against his chest. My hand came back up behind his head and my fingers grazed through the hair at the nape of his neck. He bent his head down and ran the tip of his nose up the column of my throat. I tilted my head back to rest on his shoulder. His hand splayed across my bare stomach, and I intertwined my fingers with his. His other hand was still gripping my waist. My ass was against his hardened length. Heat pooled in my core.

We rocked and swayed against each other, in time with the beat of the drums, with the beat of our hearts. Everything was passionate and electric. Our bodies moved together as one.

I lost track of time, focused solely on the feel of his body guiding mine to the music, the beat in my chest, the bond thrumming between us. I never wanted to leave this moment, this perfect moment with us in the darkness. It didn’t matter that we were surrounded by thousands of people dancing in the same way. It was only us.

I tilted my head into him and kissed up his neck to his jaw. His arm tightened around me and his hand traveled from my waist to my thigh, exposed through the slit in my silver skirt. His hand was hot against my skin, tingling from his touch. I wanted this to last forever.

Ryker’s movements slowed, his trailing hand, his body against mine. Until he stopped moving and lifted his head. I could feel his heart racing, hammering against his chest. I turned around in his arms to face him, searching his eyes and trying to understand the emotion in them. His hand cupped my face, the other on my lower back, brushing his thumb over my bottom lip and his eyes darkened, pupils dilated.

His shadows came around just the two of us, concealing us in his darkness.

“I have to,” he whispered before his mouth crashed into mine.
