I grab Corey’s wrist to stop him from advancing. I slide my way back in between them. “Stop it, Victor,” I hiss. “Just leave.”

“I’ve read all about you,” my ex tells Corey, ignoring me. “You came from nothing. You didn’t even graduate college. You’re just an overpaid, mindless jock who got lucky when he was picked to play a stupid game for a living.”

“Victor!”

“Think whatever you want,Victor,” Corey says with a smirk. “Call me stupid. Call me lucky. It doesn’t make a difference. I’m the one with Carlee, and we both know you can’t compete with me.”

Victor’s face turns an angry shade of red. “I was her first.”

Kill me now…

“And I’ll be her last,” Corey snaps back. Tingles travel through my entire body when I register the words. “If I ever see you around here bothering her again, you and I are going to have a fucking problem.”

“I don’t have to listen to you,” Victor snarls.

“You do if you don’t want me to beat the shit out of you.”

I gasp and whirl around. “Corey!”

He doesn’t take his eyes off Victor. “You have five seconds to leave before I make you leave.”

“Nice,” Victor snorts. He tries to act cool, but I see the unease creeping into his expression. He doesn’t know if Corey will make good on his threat.

My ex turns his hate-filled eyes back on me. “So this is who you want, Carlee? A guy who threatens a complete stranger?”

What Victor doesn’t know is this isn’t Corey. He isn’t a brute or a bully. He’s just trying to protect me… just like I’d try to protect him.

That’s why I need Victor to leave. There are too many people watching this interaction. I need to protect Corey’s reputation by making sure he doesn’t do something he’ll regret.

“Just go, Victor. I don’t have anything else to say to you.”

His nostrils flare. “Wow. Just… wow.” All traces of his earlier affection are gone. He looks at me with nothing but disdain. “I didn’t take you for a cleat-chasing whore, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. You never were high-class, were you?.”

I suck in a sharp breath and prepare to give him a piece of my mind just as a closed fist flies over my head and connects with his perfectly shaved jaw.

Victor’s head snaps back and he falls to the floor in a heap.

I stare at my ex, my jaw unhinged. I snap it closed as the flash of a camera goes off somewhere to my right.

I gasp, and a jolt of fear strikes me in the chest.

Shit…

COREY

“Areyou out of your damn mind, Corey? How in the world am I supposed to spin a pending assault charge?” Avery Moreno reams into me the moment I answer her phone call. Her voice travels out of the Rover’s speakers, echoing around me as I drive across town to the Lonestars headquarters. I have a meeting with Charles Wilson, and I’m bracing myself for the worst.

“I said I was sorry, Avery.” I steer off the highway and onto the access road.

“You hit a grown man, Corey. And not just any grown man, but a man whose father is the head of one of the most popular litigation law firms in the country. You’re probably going to be served papers within the hour.”

My grip on the wheel tightens. I hadn’t known Carlee’s boyfriend was a lawyer, but it wouldn’t have changed anything if I had.

Ex-boyfriend.

I’m her boyfriend now. But even if I weren’t, I’d still punch the prick for daring to speak to Carlee the way he did. She’s a goddamn goddess—an angel on Earth. Victor what’s-his-face isn’t worthy to breathe the same air as her, let alone spew thosevile lies about her. It enrages me to think of that piece of shit spending years with her. He didn’t deserve her.
