“Well, that’s something. Why not post a photo of you standing in front of some landmark in Singapore?”

“Not a bad idea, Jones.” He bobs his head in approval. “Not a bad idea at all.”

“Well, you know what they say about me, I’m the team’s idea girl.” I wink.

“You’re pretty good at your job, that’s for sure,” he says with sincerity.

The compliment makes me smile. “Thanks, Joshua.”

“You’re welcome.” He walks over and takes his phone back. “Speaking of being good at your job, how’s it going handling Johnson’s latest public scandal?”

And just like that, the smile falls from my face. “It was hardly a scandal.”

He lifts a brow. “No? That’s not what we heard.”

I shouldn’t ask. I’ve been trying so hard to keep from talking about Corey today. I don’t need to open this can of worms.

But I can’t resist. “What did you hear?”

“That Johnson punched your ex in the face for proposing to you right in front of him.”

“W-what?” I choke out. I cough to clear my throat. “That isnotwhat happened!”

“So Corey didn’t punch a guy?”

“Well, yes. He did. But Victor didn’t propose to me.”

“Ugh. Victor?” His features twist in disdain. “What kind of name is Victor?”

“I think it’s a family name.”

“It sounds like his parents were asking him to grow up to be a villain.”

I laugh. “I guess it does. But back to the point. Victor didn’t propose to me.”

“Then why did Corey hit him?”

I sigh. “I guess he felt like he had to defend me.”

“Ah. Good for him.”

I don’t know if I agree or not.

On one hand, I appreciate that Corey cares enough to feel like he needed to defend me. On the other hand, I don’t appreciatebeing painted as a helpless damsel who couldn’t handle her ex saying something awful to her.

I also hate how this ordeal allowed Corey to think he’s anything like his short-tempered, alcoholic father. To know he thinks so little of himself is heartbreaking.

“He shouldn’t have hit him,” I settle on saying.

Joshua gives me a questioning look. “Is that why you’re giving him the cold shoulder?”

I feign ignorance. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He snorts. “Okay. So ignoring him on the plane wasn’t on purpose?”

I press my lips together in distaste. I don’t like the idea of anyone watching me and Corey or reading into our interactions. Or lack thereof. “That’s really none of your business.”

The easygoing player simply shrugs his shoulders. “Maybe not. But I like Corey. And I like you. I think you should give the guy a break. It’s obvious he’s crazy about you. The whole team can see it.”
