Chapter 53

Audry

Fear threatened to overwhelm me, to take me down harder than any man had ever thrown me. Kai sat on his knees, blood dripping from his lips. One man had a knife to his throat, the gunshot wound to his shoulder slowing him down. But the other man held the gun and the power.

I moved slowly, trying not to jar my arm. I didn’t know how to help, but I wanted to. Logan was out cold behind me, and Liam and Carson were nowhere in sight.

He twisted his gun this way and that. “Samuel should have killed you when he had the chance, back when you were just a crying little boy.”

“Leave him alone,” I cried, my voice finally working through the adrenaline block.

His gray eyes tore away from Kai, landing on me. His sinister grin and the enjoyment he found in playing with his kill were evident. “Brother killers don’t get to speak,” he hissed.

“Leave her alone, Steven,” Kai coughed, spitting blood at his feet. “She didn’t do anything.”

“Didn’t do nothing? Are you that stupid that you don’t know the cunt you are thrusting into?” Steven cried. “Nate is dead.Dead after he banged some bitch. She is exactly his type—slutty, asking for it, and just a smidge of atoo good for youattitude.”

I swallowed down the emotions threatening to overwhelm me. I had to keep a straight head. That was the only way out of this.

“Nate was my brother, and he didn’t deserve to be tossed into the ocean like fish bait.”

“You and Jeffery are just after the bounty. This isn’t about Nate. You hated his guts.” Kai went to get to his feet, but Jeffery pushed him back down.

“She was real easy to draw out here, you know? You must have a magic dick or something. A quick change of contact name in her phone, and a single sexy comment…she fell into my trap so easily.” Steven spat in Kai’s face.

My cheeks heated as the pieces fell into place. Frustration pulsed through my veins. How could I have been so stupid?

“You’ve kept the pretty thing locked up tight, though. But nothing can stop a bitch like her from showing off her body,” he said, glancing back at me. “Switching the contact was easy, waiting for her to nod off at the beach. I could’ve taken her there, in public. It would’ve been too quick, though. I want to savor this.”

Steven landed another punch into Kai’s face.

A scream escaped my lips.

Kai glanced at me, screaming from his mind for me to run. But I didn’t want to leave him. I inched closer to Logan, shaking him.

“Wake up,” I pleaded. “Come on, please,” I whispered.

But Logan didn’t budge. He was still breathing, his head wound bleeding. When he woke up, he would have a killer headache and at least two bodies to deal with.

Two bodies.Tears streamed down my cheeks.Only two of us were getting out of here.

I searched Logan’s body, trying to find a weapon of any kind. Kai groaned again as they landed another kick to his side. The sound of them beating him echoed in my ears, terrorizing me. It was a sound I wouldn’t forget.

“Fuck,” I muttered. There was no weapon. His gun must have been lost in the scuffle. I glanced around, trying to find it. My gaze landed on it, on the other side of Logan and barely out of reach. I crawled to it, my fingertips grazing it.

Steven grabbed me by my hair, pulling me away from my only possibility of survival.

I kicked and screamed as he dragged me closer to Kai. He was hunched over, gripping his rib—no doubt a few were broken.

“One of you has the answers I want.”

Jeffery relaxed his hold on Kai, his face going pale. I smirked as I saw the blood staining his left sleeve. It wasn’t a deep wound, but the blood loss wouldn’t help.

“And one of you is gonna give it to me,” Steven said.

“Go to hell,” I snarled, staring up at him.

He tugged my hair harder, chuckling as I screamed in pain. “Keep moaning for me like that, babe.”
