“Is this about Mads?” I asked.

“What? No.” He shook his head. “Mads and I were a high school fling.”

I sighed, knowing I would never get a straight answer from him. Not when it came to Maddie. He was perfectly fine talking about Angel.

But he wasn’t the one who should have protected her, I reminded myself. Guilt sat heavy on my heart as I debated what to say to him.

“What would you wanna do if this…plan works out?” I asked him.

“If this childlike ruse of theirs works, I’ll be very surprised,” he stated.

“Yeah, I get that. But, let’s say it did. Let’s say we get out from under Samuel. We started our own organization. What is the first thing you’re doing? The first thing that comes to mind.”

He paused, chewing on the words. I knew an idea had flashed into his mind, but he shook it away. “This is stupid.” He stood from his chair.

“The heart wants what the heart wants,” I shouted.

“This isn’t about Mads!” He stomped off.

I rolled my eyes and stared at the wood. I was done sanding it a while ago but was enjoying the sunlight. My mind drifted to Audry. I couldn’t shake the feeling that what we were doing was wrong. Sure, I helped her with the drive. But what about the day in that hotel?

Carson’s silhouette was barely visible behind the curtains of the first floor. Without thinking about it, I stalked toward her, determined to get an opinion.

Paint fumes attacked me as I walked into the room, a fresh coat of paint donning the fireplace. Liam had created a hideaway in it, accessible from the outside. It only took a few inches of space away that no one would notice anyways.

“Hey, Carson?” I rubbed the back of my neck.

She turned, her footing secure on the ladder as she worked on the edge of the wall and ceiling. “Is Logan bothering you, too?” She took small, sure steps down to the floor.

“Well, it’s not about that actually,” I said. “I wanted to ask you something.”

“Okay?” she said, lifting a brow. She looked too much like Logan at that moment. The way she stared was as if she could see right through me.

“So…" I whistled.

“Just spit it out, Kai.” She placed a hand on her hip.

“Audry and I have been…hanging out,” I said, the words childish.

“Hanging out?” She smirked. “Is that what we call it now?”

“I uh…Is it normal?” I asked.

“Iswhatnormal?”

I groaned. “Audry has been super into, well, like…" I stuttered. “She was in a full-blown panic attack and tried to, you know…" I gestured.

Carson shook her head, her expression softening. “Survivors react in a variety of different ways.”

“Okay, but is this normal? Is her wanting to…like…?”

“Her wanting sex?” Carson filled in the blanks for me.

My face grew hot. I was having this conversation with someone who was like a baby sister to me. My skin crawled, and I felt the urge to run outside and never come back.

“It’s as normal as it can be.” Carson sighed. “It’s something that is common in survivors, hyper sexuality, that is.”

“Is it safe?” I asked.
