He hopped off the counter, dusting the crumbs before stalking toward me. “So? What’s the problem? Cat got your tongue, little mouse?”

“I’m not a mouse.” I crossed my arms over my chest, not liking the invasion of my personal space.

“You sure are lurking around my house like one.” He glared. “All quiet and creepy-like…similar to a mouse, up to no good.”

He peered down at me, scrutinizing everything about me from my posture to my tone. His suspicion hung heavy in the air, evident on his furrowed brow.

I squirmed, the awkwardness settling in. “It isn’t your house, though,” I said, holding my ground.

“Isn’t Kai’s either.” He crossed his arms, the muscles flexing against his shirt. “So, what is it, little mouse?”

I glanced up at him through my eyelashes, letting them flutter softly. I couldn’t be a threat to him. “Will you teach me how to shoot a gun?”

Logan squinted for a moment, stumbling back as if my words hit the center of his chest. “Excuse me?”

I swallowed the rising fear and nausea as I stared at him. “I didn’t stutter.”

He rubbed his chin, weighing the options. “Did Kai say no to you and all yourcharm?” He gestured to my curves.

I licked my lips. “I didn’t ask him.”

“And why’s that?” He crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes. The air grew even more tense as we navigated this game of chess. Logan was a straight shooter, no joking, and no lies.

I tilted my chin up, trying to stay brave despite wanting to cower. If I did, any respect I was about to gain from Logan would shrivel and die.

“I think you and I both know where he would stand,” I muttered.

“And you think I’ll say yes?” His smile grew, a mixture of confidence and mischief that twisted my stomach in knots. This was the right choice. It had to be. If I knew how to defend myself—in ways I never entertained before—then Kai wouldn’t have to worry.

I smirked. “Out of Liam, Carson, and Kai? You’re theonlyone who’ll say yes.”

“Why a gun, little mouse?” He hopped onto the counter again, forcing me to look even higher up to meet his eyes.

I bit my lip. “If I can take care of myself, there’s no way there is a repeat of what happened with Angel.”

Logan tensed at her name, sadness flashing across his features before they were replaced by anger. He gripped the counter tight, the muscles in his arm bulging.

“Kai won’t have to worry about me. And, let’s be honest—what Carson has taught me is good…but it isn’t going to help. Not for a while.”

“Why not ask him to teach you how to use blades?” He jutted his head to the side, motioning up the stairs.

I ran my tongue along my teeth. “Because I don’t ever want to be that close to an attacker again.”

Logan swung his legs and popped his lips apart with an audible noise. “Fine, but I don’t do things for free.”

My jaw fell open before I managed to school my impression. “What do you have in mind?”

He jumped from the counter. “You’ll owe me one day, little mouse.” He shrugged.

“Owe you one?” I lifted a brow.

“I swear you women only think of one thing.” He rolled his eyes. “Sometime in the future, I might cash in a favor. I don’t know what it is yet…but…" He scratched his back, glancing around.

My heart settled back into its rightful place in my chest, no longer thundering.I could do him a favor one day? Right?I thought. But what could I possibly help him with?

“You’re a Santora, and one day that might come in handy?—”

“Money then?” I interrupted.
