‘Nice to meet you,’ she rushes out, unblinking, before bounding back over to Jack like an excited Labrador. ‘Come with me to the tank, Shurlock,’ she says, placing her hand between the muscles of his shoulder blades which jut slightly through his shirt. ‘I was a good girl and got you an espresso this time. A double. See? I can remember things.’

Did she just saygood girl?

Jack gives her an amused smirk. ‘You trying to buy me, Rizzo?’

‘Always,’ grins Jess, stepping out to the sunny car park, as Jack follows her, but turns around, pauses in the doorway. A breeze ruffles his hair, those tidy but wild waves, and says, ‘Millie?’

‘Yes?’

‘I’ll be emailing you about Sunday rugby. A match? Might need you in a couple of weekends.’

‘Sure!’ I beam back at him. ‘Great! OK!’ And he gives a dip of his head, and leaves.

‘Jeez, Millie.’ Petra puts the back of her hand to my cheek and says, worriedly, ‘Do we need to turn the thermostat down? You’re really, really hot.’

Lex, I complained about the Sainsbury’s bag poo holiday (something good came out of my awful horrific email blunder!) and they’ve offered us a free night. How is 5thNovember for you? Please come. Me, you and Cate, as we always do?

I’m so sorry for everything that happened in the way that it did, but please, please, let’s talk. I know we both have things to say and address and apologise for. And I really do wish you hadn’t posted about it to TikTok. But I really do want to make this right if we can?

The following day, the Flye TV building is heaving, as it often is before a match day – TV crew arriving in dribbles, picking up equipment, OB production trucks being prepped, site passes being organised, call sheets being passed around – and I have spent most of this day so far trying to find an opportunity to talk to Chloe privately, something that is looming large on my list. Thelargest.Especially since Owen’s text about the favours. (I do wish he hadn’t said he kept thinking about me, though, if only for my own silly little doesn’t-know-what’s-good-for-it heart’s sake. It did nothing for all the shame I feel, too.)
