Saff snorted a laugh. “Probably.”

“Do you know where they're going to have you stay tonight?”

“No idea," Saff replied, shaking her head.

Maddie nodded slowly, then she cleared her throat. “Well, wherever it is, maybe I could stay there too? You know, so I could try to help your headache?”

Saff frowned. “You're back with your family. You should be with them.”

“Yeah,” Maddie sighed. “And it was great being with them last night, don't get me wrong. But it was also sort of weird not sleeping near you.”

She looked over at her, feeling a small twinge emerge in her chest. “It's just because you got used to it. That'll go away.”

Maddie snorted a dry laugh. “That is such ayouanswer.”

Saff cocked her head, eyeing her curiously. “What do you mean?”

Maddie shook her head. “Nothing,” she muttered, a small smile on her lips. “You're telling me you didn't miss the nightly head massage at all last night?”

Saff refused to let herself really think about that. Thinking about things like that wouldn't do her any good.

She shrugged. Then she let a few beats of silence go by before changing the subject.

“Your family seems nice.”

Maddie smiled. “They are. And I'm glad they weren't questioning you too much.”

That reminded her.

“What did you tell Sylvia about me?”

Maddie pursed her lips. “I told her the things that I thought would make her want to let you out.”

Saff waited for her to elaborate.

“We mainly talked about your medical background. I figured she would find that the most useful." Maddie ran her fingers through her blonde hair, brushing it to the side. "After I saw my family, they let me know that the doctor we had in our community didn't make it when they were traveling. My dad said that there wasn't a doctor here either, so I figured maybe she would want to make some type of deal with you.”

Saff pursed her lips and hummed.

Maddie frowned slightly. “Sorry if I told her anything you didn't want me to. I was just worried that they weren't going to let you out. It felt like that was the only option.”

It wasn't that she didn't understand the logic. She did. It was just that it felt odd knowing that there was someone else in the world now that knew those things about her.

Maddie knew a lot about her now. And she didn't think she would ever have that again.

“It's fine,” Saff said finally, glancing around the dining hall.

“I hate it when you say that,” Maddie murmured. “I feel like that means it's definitelynotfine.”

Saff’s lips quirked up in amusement. “What else do you want me to say?”

“I don't know,” Maddie breathed. “Something that would actually mean that it really is fine.”

Saff snorted a laugh. “I don't really know of any other ways to say it.”

“You're smart,” Maddie replied with a smirk. “I'm sure you can think of something.”

Saff chuckled. “I'll get right on that.”
