She thought back to some of the stretches she had seen, the ones that made her surprised that Maddie's family would choose to stay there.

“Could be better,” she muttered.

A slight frown passed over the man's face. “I agree,” he said quietly. “What would you do to improve it?”

Saff thought about that for a moment. “I think no matter what, if someone really wants to get in, eventually they will.”

This time, when he frowned, it didn’t leave his face.

As they approached the gate, she could see a small group of people gathered off to the right.

She recognized Carter and Josh standing beside each other, talking. Then she noticed Sylvia, standing on the edge of the other side of the group, engaged in conversation.

She followed James until she realized he was walking directly to Sylvia, and she decided to hang back, stopping at the edge of the group.

Carter noticed her right away and waved her over.

She ambled over to them, feeling Sylvia's eyes as they shifted to her.

She waited for her to do something, but eventually, she turned back to the person she’d been talking to.

“Glad you decided to come,” Carter said to her with a friendly smile.

Saff nodded. “Didn't really have much else to do.”

“Surprised my sisterletyou come,” Josh interjected, and something in his voice sounded almost challenging, like he was testing to see how she would respond to that.

It reminded her of being an intern at the hospital: the daily quips and the way the doctors would try to elicit some type of reaction from them.

“Maybe she thinks you need protection,” she shot back easily.

Josh stilled, a surprised look passing over his face, as Carter burst into laughter beside him.

She waited for him to spit some comment back at her, but to her surprise, he suddenly broke out into a wide smile, letting out a chuckle alongside Carter. “Yeah, maybe,” he muttered, shaking his head.

“Saff?” Sylvia's voice called out behind her.

Both Carter and Josh suddenly straightened.

She turned around, looking at the woman.

“Can I speak with you a moment?” Sylvia asked in a way that was more command than question.

She followed after her as Sylvia led them a few paces away from the rest of the group.

“Why are you here?” she asked, turning to her and crossing her arms over her chest.

Saff shrugged. “Carter mentioned it.”

“I'm sure there are much better ways that you could be spending your time here.”

Saff glared back at her. “Well, you haven't exactly given me many options. For all I know, you’re gonna throw me back into that cell before lunch.”

Sylvia glared harder at her, and for a second, Saff thought maybe she would put her back in the cell right there and then. But then, after a moment, her glare softened.

“You don't need to go back into the cell,” she said. “At least not for now.”

“That's reassuring,” Saff muttered, looking away.
