A few moments passed, then finally, the glass crunched as she heard someone coming.

“Saff?” she asked, not bothering to hide the anxiety in her voice.

She heard a cough in front of her. Then Saff’s voice. “Yeah. Right here.”

An exhale of relief flowed out of her lungs.

“We need to move through and get back off the main roads,” Saff said. “Those shots would’ve attracted whatever is around here.”

“What—no, we need to—”

“No,” Carter cut Dean off with a harsh tone. “She’s right. We need to go.”

“If we go one street over, then continue in this direction, for another mile or so, I think that’ll be the fastest way back out ontothe highway,” Saff said, her voice and footsteps coming closer to where Maddie stood.

“Okay,” he said. “Let’s go.”

She felt his hand seize her wrist, raising it to his arm, but this time, without thinking, she pulled it back.

“I—” she stuttered awkwardly, unable to explain why she had pulled away. “I’m—”

A shoulder brushed gently against hers, and she instantly knew whose it was.

“Saff..” she started, then trailed off, unsure of what to say.

“Carter,” Saff said, “lead up front. I’ll be at the back with Maddie.”

The anxiety that had begun to prickle up instantly subsided.

Carter was quiet for a moment, then she heard his footsteps scraping the ground as they walked away.

A beat of silence passed. Then she heard Saff’s lowered voice beside her. “That good with you?”

Maddie gave her a small, appreciative smile. “Yeah. Thanks,” she answered, holding her hand up in the air beside her, finally feeling relief as Saff’s arm looped around her hand.

Right away, they surged forward.

“Sidewalk,” Saff muttered. Maddie felt it with her cane and stepped up and over, then they turned directions and continued down a new street. This one seemed to be littered with items, and her cane hit against something new every couple of feet.

“Walk behind me,” Saff said, stepping halfway in front of her.

Maddie lifted her cane off the ground and followed closely behind her. They weaved quickly through the path until it came to the end.

“Step down,” Saff muttered to her. She lowered her cane and felt for the edge of the sidewalk, then stepped down off of it.

“Two up on the right,” Saff called ahead.

“I got it,” Dean yelled out.

“Path is clear,” Saff muttered to her. “You can use your cane if you want.”

Maddie lowered it down onto the ground and moved so that she was standing beside Saff again.

She heard a commotion up ahead.

“Four more up on the left,” Carter called out, and Maddie thought she could detect a hint of fear in his voice. A second later, he called out again, and this time there was definitely fear in his voice. “Three more on the right.”

“There are more behind those,” Saff said, and Maddie could feel her moving faster. “We need to go another street over and hurry out. There are too many.”
