Boris watches me for a moment longer, his eyes dark and unreadable. Then, with a slow nod, he reaches out to place a hand on my shoulder, his grip firm but not unkind.

My heart pounds as I watch his every move, searching for any hidden motives behind his seemingly genuine concern. He paces back and forth in front of me before finally stopping to turn and face me.

"Robin," he says, his voice firm but laced with a hint of worry. "I want you to work for me as my secretary. I'll make sure your salary is sent directly to the relevant account every week, and you'll be provided with free food and a place to stay. This will ensure your safety and that of your loved ones."

My eyes widen at his proposal, and I cannot help but feel immediate suspicion. Is he just trying to keep me close so he can control me?

"Wait a minute," I say, my voice shaky but determined. "Why would you do this for me? What's in it for you? And how am I supposed to trust you when I know you're involved in illegal business?"

Boris regards me thoughtfully, crossing his arms over his chest. He seems to understand my hesitation but doesn't waver in his stance.

"Robin, I know you have every right to question my intentions," he admits. "But believe me when I say that I want to help you. You and your brother are innocent in all of this, and I don't want to see you suffer because of something you had no control over. You can work for me, earn money, and leave when things are clear and safe."

I stand there, biting my lip as I try to process everything Boris has said. His offer is tempting, but can I really trust him? He must sense my hesitation because he continues, his voice firm and reassuring.

"Robin, the salary for this job is more than generous, and it would come with a level of security you won't find anywhere else," he explains. "As part of my organization, you would be under my protection. I assure you, you would have no connection to the illegal activities you witnessed."

My thoughts race, trying to think of ways to ensure Adam's safety before I agree to anything.

"Please," I beg, my voice cracking. "Can we just call my brother and make sure he's safe? If he's okay, then... then maybe I can do this."

Boris looks at me for a moment, studying my face, before finally nodding. "Alright, I'll show you where the landline is."

He leads me to a small office near the main room and points to the phone on the desk. I hesitate, suddenly feeling self-conscious about revealing too much in front of him. But when I glance at Boris, he gives me an understanding nod and steps out of the room, giving me some privacy.

With trembling hands, I pick up the receiver and dial Adam's number, praying he answers quickly. My heart races as the phone rings, every second stretching into an eternity. Finally, I hear his familiar voice on the other end.

"Robin?" he whispers, clearly trying not to draw attention to himself.

"Adam, are you alright?" I ask, my voice barely audible as I try to keep Boris from overhearing our conversation.

"Y-yeah, I'm fine," he reassures me, his voice shaky but firm. "Uncle's with me. Something bad happened. I don’t know what. We're hiding out for now."

A wave of relief washes over me, and my eyes fill with tears at the thought of my brother being safe—at least for the moment. I take a deep breath, trying to steady myself as I make a decision that could change our lives forever.

"Adam, listen," I whisper urgently. "I've been offered a job that could help us. It's risky, but it might be our only chance to get out of this mess. You need to stay hidden, okay? Promise me you'll be careful."

"I promise, Robin," he says, his voice filled with determination. "Just... be careful, alright?"

"I will," I assure him, wiping away the tears that have started to fall. "I love you, Adam."

"Love you too," he replies before hanging up.

Taking a moment to compose myself, I step back into the main room to find Boris waiting patiently. His eyes search my face for any sign of what transpired during the call, and I can see the concern etched in his expression.

"Adam's okay," I tell him, my voice steadier than I feel. “He is with our uncle.”

Boris nods, relief flickering across his face. "Good. Now that you know he's safe, are you ready to accept my offer?"

I take a deep breath, steeling myself for the path I'm about to choose. "Yes," I say firmly.

But the truth is, Boris leaves me with no choice but to accept.

Chapter 11 - Boris

On Monday morning, after the weekend, I wake up and decide to make some breakfast for Robin’s first day at work. She’s been staying with me for two nights now, but I have barely seen her.

She hardly emerges from her bedroom. I leave her meals outside her door. Sometimes, she eats them. Sometimes, she doesn’t.
