“And your father?”

“Deadbeat,” she says, biting back her quivering lip. “Never met him.”

“I’m sorry,” I whisper.

“Don’t be. Adam and I are fine on our own,” she responds defiantly. She is a fighter. I like that about her.

A silence falls between us while I finish my smoothie. Once done, I stand. “Let’s go.”

Neither of us speaks in the car while the driver drives us. Once we enter my office, I notice her look around in awe. We take the elevator to the top floor.

I notice a few people look at Robin. Some out of curiosity, and some out of a sentiment I want to have their eyes out for.

I show her to my office. “This is where I sit.” Then, I point right outside.

“That’s your desk. You’ll be helping me with my scheduling and building networks. You’ll pick up calls, take messages, and take notes during meetings. You’ll arrange my meetings and appointments, both personal and professional. Apart from that, you’re to help me with any miscellaneous jobs I might have. Today, you'll be reviewing the accounts from our clubs and ensuring all the numbers match what's been reported. I want no discrepancies. Understood?"

"Understood." She frowns slightly.

“Is there a problem?”

“I need your passwords. For emails and such.”

I’m already impressed. So far, none of my secretaries have asked such a question, and I am the one who has to remind them to keep up with my communication.

“Follow me,” I say.

"Have a seat over there." I point to the chair in front of her desk, watching as she settles in. "The passwords to access the accounts are taped under the desk drawer. Get to work and let me know if you have any questions."

"Yes, sir." Her gaze remains on the laptop.

“And Robin,” I murmur before leaving.

“Yes?”

“If you open your drawer, you’ll find something in there.”

“What?” she asks, excitedly opening the door. Inside lies a brand-new iPhone.

She looks up at me, incredulous.

“Boris, thank you!”

“I figured you’d need it for your job.”

“Uh-huh,” she nods, with the biggest smile on her face, which is all I wanted to see in the first place.

A few weeks pass, and Robin has seamlessly integrated into my operations. She handles her tasks efficiently and without complaint, proving to be a valuable asset.

We enter and leave the office together. There’s no other option since she is under my protection.

Usually, I make sure to take my work home if it’s getting late. But tonight, I’m working on closing our books for the year, and I’m in the office later than I intended.

It’s only when my phone beeps that I realize the time. After eleven.
