“It’s not spelled right. I looked at the others and noticed an error in this one. Then, I found others. I called the company, and they confirmed that this isn’t their invoice.”

I narrow my eyes as I process her words. An incorrect invoice? "How did you manage to catch that error?"

She takes a chip from a bag open next to her, dips it in some sort of chocolate shake, and takes a bite. Strange choice, but I ignore it. She proceeds to explain. "I was just double-checking everything. The invoices are all in the same format, so I figured if there was trouble in the books, I’d find it in the numbers or names.”

I have to admit, she's impressive. She's smart and doesn't seem to make mistakes. I can tell she's not just going through the motions like some of my previous secretaries.

"Good job, Robin. I'll make sure to double-check who submitted these invoices and have them dealt with. Just keep doing what you’re doing.”

“For what you pay me, I’m all yours,” she jokes.

God, does she say these things on purpose? I remember the last service she performed for me that involved payment, and I lose my focus all over again.

“Boris? Earth to Boris?” she waves her hands in front of me.

I cough, clearing my throat. “Let’s go home. We’ve worked enough,” I say. I can’t wait to get home and clear my head. Alone, in my bed.

That night, I have a dream—more of a nightmare and less of a dream. I see Robin walking down a street, and a man joins her. I can’t see his face, but he holds her hand. She looks up at him and smiles.

The same way I want her to smile at me.

I begin to run after her to see who he is.

It’s the man she’s protecting. Suddenly, vans come out of nowhere and, in this absurd dream world, begin to throw guns at Robin. The man is laughing manically, and Robin is on the ground, trying to collect the guns.

“I have to save you,” she screams while he laughs. “I’m doing this for you.”

A gunshot comes out of nowhere, and then the world goes dark. I’m searching for her in the dark when I hear a strange voice.

“She’s with him. She’s running things for him.”

I wake up with a start, sweat beading on my forehead. My heart races, and it takes me a few moments to realize it was just a dream.

I toss and turn for what feels like hours before finally drifting back to sleep. The next morning, I wake up feeling off, the dream still lingering in the back of my mind. I pull myself together and head downstairs. When I arrive, I find Robin waiting for me. She's dressed in a navy blue dress today, thefabric kissing her curves just right. It's hard to focus when she’s standing there, looking like that.

"Morning," she says with a smile, her honey-colored hair falling in soft waves around her face. "You look troubled."

I try to brush it off. "I'm fine. Just had a long night."

But the thing is, I’m pissed. She’s working so hard but still won’t tell me who she was running drop-offs for. She said It was to protect a loved one. Who is he? A lover?

The fact that I’m jealous isn’t lost on me. I take a deep breath and remember who I am. I’m Boris Zolotov, and for me, family and work come first. I can’t let my thoughts run wild, especially not for a woman who isn’t mine in the first place.

“Let’s just go to work,” I say.

On the way to work, the driver takes a sharp turn.

Robin jerks forward.

"Are you okay?" I ask, my voice filled with concern. Her face is pale, and she looks like she's about to pass out.

"Yes, just a moment. I think I'll be fine," she says, trying to steady herself.

I can't deny the fear that's creeping into my chest. My eyes flick between the road and Robin, trying to decide what to do.
