Suddenly, she clutches her stomach. “I think I’m about to be sick,” she moans and runs out of the kitchen.

I rush after her, the smell of eggs gone from my mind and concern for Robin taking over completely. I stand outside the bathroom and hear her retching inside. I pace up and down the hall, waiting for her to come out.

She told me she was feeling better. So how did she get so sick again so quickly?

And then, it all comes back to me. The motion sickness. Aversion to certain foods. Strange cravings. She ate chips with chocolate dip right in front of my eyes.

Could she… be pregnant?

The thought settles into my head, and in that instant, I know I have to ask her.

Moments later, Robin walks out. Her face is flushed. I look her up and down, and then I notice it. The tiniest bulge across her lower stomach—almost like she gained an extra pound or two. No one would notice unless they looked.

“Robin?” I ask seriously.

She pales, as if she knows what I’m about to ask.

“Don’t lie to me, because I am taking you to a doctor regardless of what you say right now. But it’s better for both of us if you’re honest with me. Are you pregnant?”

There’s a long, painful silence. Eventually, she gives me the slightest nod, her eyes filling with tears.

Chapter 12 - Robin

My back hits the bathroom door with a soft thud, my body shutting down after finally revealing the secret that’s been haunting me. I feel relieved, but at the same time, I also fear what might happen next. The words "I'm pregnant" still hang in the air, lingering like smoke after a gunshot.

Boris, his eyes as dark and intense as a stormy night in the ocean, steps toward me, his presence overwhelming.

"Robin," he says, voice surprisingly gentle for a man carved from steel, "You can't stand here all night. Come, sit."

His large hand closes around my arm, not rough but insistent. He guides me to the faded chair at the entrance of the hallway. I sink down, the reality of my confession pressing down on me like the weight of the world.

"How long have you been hiding this from me?” he asks.

“I haven’t been hiding anything,” I declare. “I just didn’t think it was necessary to tell you.”

“Fine. Let me rephrase. How long since you conceived?”

The wheels turn in my head. If I give him a timeline, he will know it’s his child, which is something I want to avoid. I can raise this child on my own, and there is no need for me to place the onus of responsibility on Boris.

The man’s brothers paid for a strip dance. It’s hardly fair for him to end up with a baby in tow.

“I… I don’t recall. A few weeks.”

“Have you been to the doctor?” Boris asks.

I shake my head.

Boris paces back and forth in front of me, his mind working at lightning speed. I can almost see the gears turning in his head, calculating, analyzing.

Finally, he stops in his tracks and looks at me with a piercing gaze. "I'll schedule an appointment for you. We need to make sure everything is fine with you and the baby."

An appointment with the doctor? I begin to panic. If Boris discovers how far along I am…

“I’ve already set one up,” I lie.

“Then I will come along.”

“I can manage,” I insist.
