Megan patted Snowball one more time and stood.

“Tell me.” Anger and jealousy swirled inside him like a fierce tornado. “I’ll take care of it.”

“Let’s just say I see how she looks at you like you are colorful new paints she can’t wait to try.”

Heat crept down his back. He wasn’t expecting her to say that, but Suzy kissed him. Megan was probably right. Suzy was interested in him.

This would never do. She insisted it was simply a kiss, but he had a horrible feeling it was so much more to her. Unfortunately, it felt that way to him, too.

Megan pushed her hair out of her face. “Daniel, we have been friends since college. I like you, but I love my sister. I don’t want her getting hurt, do you understand?”

He swallowed hard. He didn’t, either. That would be the last thing he would want for the young, beautiful artist. “Me neither.”

“I also know your mom did a number on you. You gave up your dreams for her. You don’t trust easily. I hate to say this, but you’re damaged. I’m not sure you’re the right person for Suzy.” She frowned. “I’m sorry to be so brutally honest, I just don’t want—”

“Your sister to get hurt.” His jaw tightened. “Don’t worry: I’ll keep my distance from her.”

He had to get away from Megan before she saw how much their conversation hurt him. He knew she only had Suzy’s best interest at heart, but her words still stung like a swarm of hornets out for blood.

“Snowball needs her run,” he said.

“I’m sorry if this hurt you—”

“I’m fine.” He tugged on Snowball’s leash. “Let’s go Girl.”

He sprinted away from Megan, but the truth of her words followed. He was damaged. Suzy deserved someone better than him.

Suzy sat on her couch with a bowl of popcorn. She picked up the remote. “Let’s see if we can find something good on Netflix tonight.” She stroked Stinker. “Did I tell you I kissed Daniel, and it was wonderful?”

He purred as if to answer her. Of course, she’d told him at least a dozen times since getting home. Now she was humming that silly love song from the art studio. Maybe there’d be a good romantic movie on Netflix.

“He’s wonderful most of the time.” She turned on her small TV. “He even helped me clean up after Billy destroyed the studio, but then he bolted again. I wish he hadn’t.”

Her cell phone rang. Tinges of hope sprung through her. Was it him? Was he thinking of her as much as she was of him? Would he want to come over tonight or perhaps go out?

She grabbed her cell. Megan. She frowned. Not the person she’d hoped for. It was unusual for her sister to call her on a weekend. She was usually still at the office or with Brent.

“Hey, Sis.” She muted the TV sound. “What’s going on?”

“Guess who I ran into this afternoon?”

“Who?” She took a nibble of a piece of popcorn.

“Daniel.”

“From the gallery?” Suzy’s stomach tightened.

Did he tell Megan about their kiss? What would her sister think? Would she be happy about it? Her sister did say to be careful with him. At the time, Suzy laughed and told Megan that Daniel was the last man she’d want to be with.

“Yes,” Megan snapped back. “We don’t know any other Daniels, do we?”

“Sorry.” She gulped. “Where did you see him?”

“He was in the park.”

“Oh?” she said, putting the remote down on her coffee table. “Was he with someone?”
