“Fine,” she mumbled, clicking off the phone.

She held Stinker up to her face. “Looks like I am going to work with Daniel Wilson, and it’s all your fault, little guy.” She kissed his head. “I must love you because I surely do not like Daniel Wilson. And the feeling is mutual, I’m sure. You should see how he looks at me. Not in a good way, I can assure you.”

Chapter three

Suzy linked arms with her sister as they strolled through the city. Birds chirped everywhere, and the city hummed. Bright red, yellow, and vibrant purple tulips sprinkled the sidewalks and storefronts. The train zig-zagged along the main street as people hurried by.

“I love spring,” Megan said dreamily.

“Me too.” She squeezed Megan’s arm. “Must remind you of your wedding.”

Her sister beamed. “I was never happier. I wish the same for you. You would find—"

“Oh no.” Suzy shook her head. “I’ve already got my guy.”

“You mean cat?” Megan rolled her eyes. You need someone who doesn’t use kitty litter, for goodness’ sake, or take furball medicine. Someone who doesn’t have to have expensive food for urine crystals.”

Suzy laughed. It was nice being together as sisters. Seeing her sister more than once a month was a rare treat. Megan was married not only to Brent but also to her job at the firm.

Suzy was lost in her art or teaching those messy kids at the Art Creation. Some kids, especially Billy, used every ounce of the glue and threw glitter everywhere.

“We’re here.” Megan stopped in front of an elegant brick building.

Megan opened the front door and breezed inside as a little bell rang. Suzy trudged behind her. The contract was signed. Her fate was sealed, locked in with Daniel Wilson.

Speak of the devil. He strode toward them with a forced smile, which appeared strained to her. Not until he reached Megan did his smile soften into an authentic one.

“It's Good to see you,” he said, embracing her sister. He glanced at Suzy. "And you.”

Although he said the words, his tone conveyed otherwise as his eyes scanned over her. Suzy straightened. She had brushed her hair this time before putting it into a bun. If only her buns looked stylish; instead, they just looked messy.

At least she wore a nice skirt and blouse resembling a beautiful watercolor. Megan and she found it on their trip to Paris after high school.

“You look better,” he said, folding his arms as his gaze slid over Suzy. “A work in progress, but definitely an improvement.”

“I beg your pardon,” she said, glaring at him.

He sighed as if he had little patience with her. “You must dress the part, not as an art teacher to kids but as a talented and successful artist. It’s all part of the package to sell your pieces. Essentially, you are your art.”

“I guess that makes you the suit who cares little about art, but—” she started.

Megan gave her that look, which meant to stop talking that instant. Daniel had already signed the contract. He was forced to take her as a client, whether he wanted to or not.

“I’m sure what my sister means is—” Megan started.

He shook his head. “I don’t care what she thinks of me. I just want her art to sell. Why don’t you come to my office, and we can glance over your portfolio? You do have one today, right?”

Suzy nodded.

“Great,” Megan said. “I would love to stay, but as usual, I’m off to the office.”

He gave Megan a dazzling smile. "Thanks for dropping her off. It's so nice to see you again. Stay in touch.”

Suzy took a deep breath. He made it sound like she was a dog or a small child, and Megan was her mother. She hated, despised, and even wished him ill, nothing serious, just a bad cold or perhaps the flu.

He gave her a funny look and pointed to his office. “Shall we get this over with?”

“Are you always this unpleasant?” she muttered.
