“Alastor is taking alternative transport to Vegas,” he said. “As is Lily.”

“What?” snapped Cole. “Theo! Theo, wake up!”

Theo sat up, his hair tousled, eyes blinking. “What’s up? Oh, did I miss take off?”

“Alastor’s not here,” stated Cole. “Apparently, he and Lily are going home a different way. You know anything about this?”

Theo shook his head, looking confused. “It's news to me. That wasn’t the plan.”

"Plans have changed," Ash announced.

Cole snapped his laptop shut, his brow furrowing. "Where's Alastor?" he demanded, voice tight with barely concealed concern.

Ignoring Cole's question, Ash continued, "Before any of you think about vacation time, there's another job."

I tensed, glancing at the empty seat where Lily should've been sitting, my mind racing. A job? Now? We hadn't even touched down yet, and Alastor and Lily were missing. None of this added up.

"Another job? What sort of job?" Carlisle asked, placing his book face down on his lap, interest piqued despite the situation.

"Details will come," Ash said, waving a dismissive hand. "But rest assured, it'll be worth your while."

Cole's jaw clenched, and I could see the muscle working there as he processed Ash's evasion. "That doesn't answer my question. Where. Is. Alastor?"

The air between them crackled, tension thick enough to slice through. But Ash simply reclined further into the chair.

"Alastor is our leader," Theo stated. "And I'm second. Whatever this 'job' is, we've had no word. And you are not even part of this team."

"Things change," Ash countered coolly.

"Change?" Theo's voice was a growl now, his body tensing as if ready to spring. I found myself wishing I’d kept my knife in my belt rather than in my bag.

"Correct. I am taking command."

"Like hell you are!" Theo snapped back, fists clenched at his sides.

“What have you done with Alastor and Lily?” asked Cole.

Ash looked at Cole and smiled. “Oh, don’t worry, I haven't harmed them. They’ve just been escorted somewhere safe.”

“But why?” demanded Theo.

“I told you, I have a job for you, and I wanted to ensure your cooperation,” said Ash. he removed his shades and glared down at Theo, who to my surprise took a step back.

"What the hell are you doing, Ash?" he demanded. “Who are you? Cause you sure as hell aren’t a low-level demon if you managed to subdue Alastor.”

Ash shrugged. “It wasn’t that hard. He was blind drunk and rather… distracted. Thankfully, I’d already drugged the bottle of whiskey in his tent, so the tranquiliser dart worked quite quickly.”

“You bastard!” I growled, jumping to my feet.

“Sit down, Sariel,” he said, sounding almost bored.

I stormed towards him, grabbing the lapels of his jacket. “Where the hell did you take them? If you’ve hurt them, I swear to God, I’ll-”

“I said, sit down!” Ash’s eyes glowed red, like Alastor’s, distracting me for a split second, just long enough for his fist to connect hard with my face, sending me flying backwards over the low table, and crashing to the ground. Theo jumped up with a roar, but I got to my feet quickly as I saw his eyes turn gold.

“Theo, sit down. Theo, I'm fine,'' I said urgently, bringing my hand to my face.

“I’ll fucking kill him for laying his hands on you!” Theo growled.
