Sweat drops born from anxiety ran down the back of my neck.

"Yes, I'll be there in a minute," I said over my shoulder and turned to face Jessica and Wendy.

Jessica's mouth was wide open, and her eyebrows were raised to the roof.

"James Sullivan, are you banging your nanny?"

What the fuck?

"No, Jess, keep it shut, please?" Wendy also slapped her wife's arm to make her keep it on the low.

"I'm sorry, but she seems very comfortable taking care of the baby. A girl is allowed to make an educated guess."

Educated my ass.

"Jessica." I said in a low, warning growl, and I sounded exactly like Zach when he was pissed off.

"Don't take that tone with me. Why are you hiding this woman? Invite us in, jackass."

"Jess, maybe James has a reason for not wanting us to march into his life like a couple of bulldozers."

Yes, I did; I had so many!

I stepped outside the house and shut the door behind me.

"Girls, look, the thing between Rita and I is a little unconventional..."

"Uh, Rita! That's a sexy ass name. Does she have a gay hot sister? We still didn't find a third for our threesome."

"And we won't need a third if you keep acting like a bitch." Thank you, Wendy, my only ally. "What do you mean, James? Is there something we can help with?"

No matter what you threw at her, Wendy was always in a rational space of mind. Zach and I agreed that Jess would have been in jail by now if they hadn’t have gotten hitched. Maybe Wendy could be my savior too.

"Thanks, Wendy but no. This thing with Rita is something serious. Really, really serious, but I did something. I... I deceived her in the beginning of our relationship, put her on the wrong lead, and now it's too late to back up."

"You lied to her?" they said in unison.

"I'm not proud of it, but I'm here now."

"Shit, James what did you tell her?"

I was not even going to touch that one.

"It doesn't matter, Jess, but please, can we push the visits back a couple of days? Please. It has nothing to do with you, but I'm in very deep shit right now, and I don't wanna screw this up. I'm done screwing up."

I was not sure if it was the regret in my voice or if the girls could just see the shame and misery, but they both backed off.

"Ok, we'll leave you to it for now, but something smells like shit. I'm starting to get worried."

"Jess is right."

"I know, I really, really know, and I will make it right by everybody. I just need some more time."

Every word was true. I needed to find a middle ground and soon, preferably before Zach knocked down my door and called CPS on me for real.

Jessica sighed and rolled her eyes, and this was how I knew that at least for now, I got to her.

"Fine, you got two days. That's when all of us are on call together, and we're gonna talk about this."
