“I see, baby. You look great.” Fran dressed her in a red dress and black shoes and put a hairband with a big poppy flower on it in her hair. Romina did truly look like a doll that came to life. She was beautiful and she shared so many features with her father. I was always aware of that, but now that he was here and I could see all the ways she was taking after him? It was startling.

“Mama, but now you’re dirty. There’s flour all over you. Maybe you should take a bath.”

Roman whispered in my ear from behind that he was ‘more than happy to help me with that’ and I elbowed him in the ribs.

“Yeah, honey, I should.”

“Roman is dirty too. Did you have a food fight?”

“Yes, we did.” Roman said.

“Without me?” Romina looked at him with the same rich brown eyes he had. Roman just hurt her feelings.

“Well, I, umm, you weren’t here, baby girl.”

“You could have waited for me, Roman.”

“Right. I can pour some flour on you right now, but that means you’ll have to take another bath.”

“No!” She promptly answered him.

“That’s what I thought. I’ll make it up to you, ok?”

“Promise?”

“You have my word, Romina.”

I tried to warn him, but he didn’t listen. He never did, and now Romina had him wrapped around her fingers, ready to do whatever she wanted.

“Tell me about yourself.” He said to me, while turning in the massive hotel bed to touch my face softly, almost like I was made of China.

Damn it, how did we end up here? When I left the coffee shop with him, I told myself it was just a date with a hot guy. I work almost all day, I don’t have time to meet guys and think about relationships, so dinner with nice company was tempting. He did take me to dinner, he made me laugh, he kissed me under a street lamp, and before I knew it we were in a hotel, clawing each other’s clothes off. I wanted him with such intensity, it scared me to think about it. It was like my body started to make decisions independent from my brain. I just knew I had to have him and let him have me.

“What do you want to know, brown eyes?”

“Anything. Everything.”

Roman Stefani, law student, extraordinary in bed. That’s all I knew about him, but still, I wanted to open my heart to him like I was one of the books in the Columbia U library, and let him read me line by line. What was happening to me?

“I’m really not that interesting. You already know I’m a waitress.”

“No boyfriend?”

“I’m here with you, aren’t I?” Naked, my skin still covered in his smell.

“That’s not an answer.”

“No boyfriend. I’ve had nothing serious in a few months.”

“And the not serious ones?”

“Do you want to exchange sex-life stories? Because I have a feeling yours is more entertaining.” Rich, young, beautiful, and a future lawyer? I don’t need to know him to be sure this guy bangs constantly. How stupid was I to just fall at his feet like any other conquest?

“Fair point. Family?”
