“Enzo, I might pass by The Mask today, and I’ll take the security tapes you needed. Do you remember the time slot?”

I took the opportunity.

“You need me there now?”

“What? No, I told you I’m going.” He will catch on, eventually.

“Yeah, you’re right. I can get to you in twenty minutes.”

“Are you using me to get out of lunch with the Russians?”

“Yes.”

“Fine. Call me when you’re free.”

“Will do.”

I closed the call and looked at my dad.

“It’s Roman. He needs me to take care of something downtown. I’m going to have to cut this short.”

“Sure, go.” I had a feeling he knew I was just doing this for show, but he definitely had no idea why. The truth was I couldn’t watch Alexei Popov toy with the woman that possessed me like I was cursed by her.

“Katja, I’m sorry I have to cut this short. It was lovely meeting you, and I’m sure we’ll see each other around town.”

“It was nice meeting you too.”

“Katja,” her father barked, “be polite how I taught you. Give Enzo your number, and maybe you two could meet. Katja doesn’t have a lot of friends in New York, and she wants to go to this show, or something. Could you do me a solid and take her?”

“Papa, I don’t need you to push people to spend time with me.”

“I’m not pushing, I’m asking.”

And right then all eyes were on me. If I said no, I’d just make Katja feel like shit after I just told her to not take that from anyone.

“Sure, I could take you.”

“It’s nice of you to offer, but you’ll get bored.”

“I’m sure I can manage.” Plus, this would give me a chance to find some intel on Ludmila.

“It’s a poetry reading.”

“Great.” Fuck. “When?”

“Friday.”

I gave her my number and promised to be her partner for that reading. I was killing two birds with one stone – I kept my promise to my father, and Popov was off my scent while I was trying to find the right way to bring his wife back into my bed and away from him.

When I got back to my car, I called Roman and put him on speaker.

“I guess it was a good thing that I listened to Salva and passed this lunch, huh?”

“Yeah, it was shit. This Popov guy is bad news.”

“Don’t you think we know that? The man’s an idiot who has stacks of cash and wants to feel important.”

“I need you to tell me more. What does Dad want from him?”
