He turns and sprints out of the door.

“You know she won’t want burned food,” Las says dryly, his eyes on the doorway.

“He needs something to do. All of his energy is focused on her and his anxiousness.”

“Yours isn’t?”

“As long as I’m near her, I’ll be fine,” I growl.

“I hate seeing her like this.” He sits on the edge of the bed, rubbing his hand over his head.

“She’s filled with life. This is unnatural,” I agree.

“I can’t wait to see her lion.”

“She’s going to be beautiful.”

We fall silent, our attention on her. I hear pans being dropped and Lucas cursing. He will burn down the kitchen.

“I should go help him,” Las offers.

“Good idea.” He stands, but I stop him. “I want to say something.”

He looks over his shoulder. “What’s up?” He frowns.

I hold his eyes. “I never told you thanks.”

He tenses and turns to face me. “For what?”

“For looking for me. For never giving up.” He looks away. “For killing her,” I say harshly and his eyes snap back. “I thought about finding her after I escaped. I had dreams of seeking vengeance. I actually scared myself frequently with the severity of my rage and need to make her pay for what she did. I’m grateful, but at the same time, I hope you don’t have regrets or thoughts of guilt.”

He looks down. “I did,” he whispers. “I thought of all the ways I could have handled things differently. I was filled with anger.” Las is the calmest out of all of us. “I was pissed that she brought the rage out of me to a level that made me uncomfortable. I don’t like any violence towards women, so I think that is the worst part. If it would have been a man, I don’t think I would have felt as much guilt. She was the one that made it possible for you to be stuck in a cage. If the men that held you were still alive, I would hunt them down. I would kill them.” He takes a few steps.

“I would have done the same for Lucas. I would definitely do it for Breeane. When you spoke about your time there, the guilt disappeared. Hearing what you had to go through, the pain, and shame you expressed, made it go away.” He then drops a bomb. “I learned more about her actions later—she did this many times for them. So, no, I don’t regret anything. You are my brother and I would do anything to protect our family. You both would do the same.”

“I lost my way.” I shake my head.

“You did, but you found it.”

“Breeane,” I start, looking at her face. “She was the one who healed us.”

“Yes,” he says softly.

“I love you,” I say. “Thank you for protecting the family and watching out for Lucas.”

“Fucker does have a mean punch,” he smiles.

“He hit you?” I laugh.

“Many times.” He shakes his head. “Some of the places I found him drunk, he didn’t want to leave.”

Something shatters in the kitchen. “Shit.” I rub my neck.

“I need to get in there,” Las says, and I nod. He reaches the door and stops but doesn’t look back. “Thank you for saying that, for acknowledging my actions. I’m really fucking glad you are back.”

I watch his back until I can’t see him anymore and then concentrate on the woman beside me. I am worried, but I’m also curious.

What is she going through?
