Chapter Twelve

Lucas

“Fuck,” I growl. “This is fucking bad.” I let Las drive. I was too shaky. “Breeane was starting to trust us. I will not handle it well if she turns away from us because of my stupid shit.”

“Calm, brother. She has more faith in our bond than that.”

“I don’t know,” I whisper, rubbing my head. “We’re just getting started. It’s fucking day three. She doesn’t love us yet.” Maybe if she was a shifter and felt the bond as severely as we do, she wouldn’t be able to live without us. It killed me today to be away from her, and it was only a few hours. I’m ecstatic to see her now, but I’m terrified that she will turn her back on us once she learns what a weak idiot I am. My leg starts to bounce.

“We are just getting started,” he agrees. “But she knows about our world. She has seen and heard about worse things than you fighting.”

“You know it was more than just fighting,” I remind him. I regret every minute.

“I know,” he says softly.

“I wish I would have told Logan first,” I voice my regret. “He’s probably pissed as fuck.”

“He is,” Las confirms.

“At least you could lie,” I shout.

“I’m not going to do that.”

“What kind of brother are you?”

“The honest kind of brother.”

“Make me feel better,” I demand.

He stops beside Logan’s truck, and I feel nauseated. “You will get through it. You are going to explain, and we will make sure none of this shit comes back on Breeane. She is the most important factor, right?”

“Yes, yes, she is.” I rub my hand down my leg, willing it to stop twitching.

“Prove it,” he snaps.

I nod and open the door. Before I can return to the truck and avoid this situation, I walk to the office. I grip the handle and concentrate on ensuring Breeane isn’t scared to be my mate.

I couldn’t handle her walking away well. It would kill me, and then I would put my fighting skills to use again. There wouldn’t be a way back from that.

Las nudges my back, and I open the door.

Breeane is perched on a chair in the waiting room, watching Logan pace. Yes, he is pissed. Quinn is leaning against the wall, looking bored. I don’t think anything upsets or freaks the bear shifter out.

Logan’s head snaps my way, and he narrows his eyes. “Explain.”

“I will.” I hold my hand out. “But first…” I look at Quinn. “Who was talking, and what was said?”

“I went to the next town on a case. When I was done with my business, I went to a restaurant. There were two men in the next booth. They were whispering; they were human and unaware that a shifter could hear everything. One of the men was named Devon; the other was never called by name.” I sit weakly on the couch, avoiding Breeane’s intent gaze. “They were furious about the fight they lost thousands of dollars from. It got interesting when they whispered the word shifter. I learned there is a shifter fighting ring that some humans know about, watch, and actively bet on. I heard them say ‘Lucas.’ A lion shifter named Lucas.”

“Did they know I was here?” I clasp my hands in between my knees.

“Not your exact location, but they must have a connection with a shifter because someone is helping track you.”

“Do they know about Breeane? My brothers?”

“Not that I heard.”

I bow my head, my knuckles turning white. “What else?”
