My lips twitch. “Another no.”

“Fuck, son. We’ve all been blinded by pussy before.” I stifle a laugh. “We were just glad you were alive and safe. It’s a good thing your mother isn’t here right now. I cannot guarantee that she won’t chew you out after she breaks down in tears.”

My vision blurs. “I’ll take any punishment she dishes out.”

“Do I get that deal, too?”

“Yes,” I agree. The silence lasts so long that I think I lost the call. “Dad.”

“I’ve missed your voice saying that,” he says softly. “I understood the pressure you were under. If you didn’t want to be Alpha, I wouldn’t have forced you into it. I felt such guilt. You went to that bar because you were conflicted. I never wanted you to do anything that didn’t fulfill you.”

“Dad.” My vision gets worse. “The night I was taken, I decided to talk to you about it. I didn’t want to take over. I didn’t get the chance.”

“I want you to be happy. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.” He sighs. “Do you want to stay there? Build your own little pack?”

“Yes. We have friends here. There is no leader; everyone is equally strong.”

“I will support you.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

“We will leave in the morning. If not tonight. I don’t think I can hold your mom back once I tell her.”

“Wait, Dad.”

“I really will beat the shit out of you if you say we can’t come,” he grits out.

“It’s not that.” I take a deep breath. “We found her.”

“That bitch that drugged you? I know. Your brother thinks he can keep anything from me. I asked him where she was buried so I could piss on her grave,” he says ruthlessly.

“Jesus, Dad.”

“I didn’t. Fuck, but I wanted to.”

“No, we found our mate.” More silence. “We would like time with her without our parents staying on the property.”

“Wait. Is she a lion?”

“No, she’s human.”

“That is going to take more time than I want to give before we see you.”

“She knows that we are lion shifters. Her friend is a bear. She’s very open to being our mate.”

“Really?” he asks hopefully.

“Really. She just needs some time.”

“Time? Why wouldn’t she want to be with my sons?”

“It’s not that. You know it’s a life-changing decision.”

“Fine. Four days. I’ll give you four days.”

“Dad,” I sigh. I want to see them just as much as they want to see me, but our mate comes first, even over our parents.

“One week,” he counters.
