My hand hovered in the air, my knuckles centimeters away from Jamie’s door. Showing up in the guests’ domain wasn’t a usual practice but I had to see Jamie… even if it was midnight. To my surprise, the door swung open before I knocked, and Jamie and I came face to face.

I slowly lowered my hand as we stared at each other. He seemed surprised to see me too.

“Charlotte, I was just coming to see you.”

“Really?”

We hadn’t seen or spoken to each other since we hiked back to the resort last afternoon. We’d taken our time trekking through the forest because although we didn’t speak, neither of us wanted to head back to the reality of our situations. I suppose neither of us wanted to admit or accept that this was the end of our… whatever there was between us.

He exhaled. “Yeah. I’m sorry I didn’t find you earlier. I meant to, I just…”

“It’s okay. You don’t have to explain. I get it.” I imagined he had a lot to think about concerning Lincoln.

His expression softened. “You always get it.”

“I always get you.” I shrugged.

Jamie made a low groaning sound and his face twisted into a grimace. He then murmured, “You know, what? Fuck it.”

“Fuck wh?—?”

He swallowed my gasp when he pulled me to him and captured my mouth. As stunned as I was that he kissed me right in the hallway where any of his friends could come out of their rooms and see us, I melted against him and kissed him back with fervor.

“I told myself that I wouldn’t touch you again until I spoke to Lincoln,” he whispered against my lips. “But here you are and I can’t resist.”

He maneuvered us inside, closed the door, and pressed me against it. He didn’t have to do much to get me hot for him. I found that all he had to do was be present and my reproductive organs went haywire. When he kissed me like this, deep and with so much passion, fluid gushed between my thighs. However, I came to see him about something important.

“Jamie…”

“Hmmm?” He hummed, yet he only kissed me harder. He slid his hands behind me to cup my ass and pull me closer. He tasted like liquor and smelled of it, and I wondered if he was drunk.

Tearing my lips away from him, I peered into his eyes. “How much did you have to drink?”

His lips twisted into a wry smile. “A lot… more than usual. It’s okay though. I’m sober now… mostly. That’s why I was just now coming to see you.”

I sighed, feeling responsible for him behaving unlike himself. I might not have known him long but my instinct told me he wasn’t one to overdo it with alcohol because he was a control freak. Right now, he was in a situation that he couldn’t control and I had a lot to do with it.

Cupping his face, I studied him and affection hit me hard in the chest. The attraction I’d had for Jamie when we first met blossomed into something much more potent… and frightening.

“Oh, Jamie… I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“Everything.”

“I’m not sorry,” he said, his hold on me tightening. “Meeting you, getting to know you…” He sighed. “This has been the best week of my life.”

My heart warmed, melted, and ached all at the same time. “I came to say goodbye,” I whispered. “When you didn’t come to see me, I was worried that you’d leave without saying goodbye.” I learned that they were leaving tomorrow… in a matter of hours.

He tucked my hair behind my ear. “I wouldn’t do that.”

We stared at each other. I supposed he wasn’t sure what else to say. However, I had something to say, so I ducked out of his hold and hurried to the open door that led to the balcony.

Jamie hesitated but followed.

“It’s been a strange evening,” I said, lifting my face to inhale as the night breeze brushed my face.

“How so?”
