“I’m sure Lincoln will come around,” he continued. “After all, he and Charlotte were no longer together.” A phone rang in Michael’s background. “I’ve got to go, fellas. Jamie, I’ll keep you posted on Lincoln’s mood and let you know when it’s safe to try talking to him again.”

“Thanks, man.”

After Michael disappeared, I directed my attention to Spencer. “What do you think? Should I reach out to Charlotte?”

Spencer rubbed his jaw. “Go for it.”

“Spencer,” Alex seethed.

“I’m going to go before Alex labels me a Benedict Arnold as well. Later, gents.”

Alex and I were left on the line. I stared at him for a moment. Finally, I asked, “What’s your real problem with this entire situation?”

“What other problem could I have other than one friend betraying the other?”

“I didn’t betray?—”

“So you keep saying.”

I huffed. “I think I know what’s going on. You think that Lincoln’s heart is broken and it hits too close to home. You got your heart broken by?—”

“Don’t fucking say it,” he snapped.

I snapped my mouth shut and took in his darkened expression. Perhaps it was best not to jump down that rabbit hole. “Then you say it. Say something. I don’t want two of my best friends pissed at me.”

“I hate that our group dynamic isn’t the same, okay? That’s my problem. I’ve never had much of a family until I met you assholes in college.”

I smiled at that. We forged a bond that was like any blood-related family.

“We just had one of our group chats and Lincoln is missing. I don’t like it.” He sighed.

“Me either. I’ll try my best to fix things with Lincoln but I can’t just forget about her, Alex, and I need your help.”

“Nope. I know where this is going.” He shook his head emphatically. “Absolutely not.”

“I confess… I called the resort but they said she wasn’t there. I don’t know if she got fired after all or if she quit. We never exchanged phone numbers…”

“Jamie, no. Lincoln is angry with you. I’m not about to help piss him off further.”

“I just need to talk to her. The way things ended doesn’t sit well with me. Come on, Alex.”

“You can find her. You have the resources.”

“I know, but you can do it faster.” By faster, I meant the very next day. His resources outdid mine by far when it came to these things. “Please, Alex.”

He heaved a sigh. “Fine. I’ll do it. After that, I’m taking a break from all of you asshats and your emotional shit. I’m serious, don't call me.”

I smirked when he ended the call because I knew his break from us “asshats” wouldn’t last. He’d forget he was pissed at me in two days tops, and he’d call me with some ridiculous story about some shenanigan he got himself into.

Putting my phone down, I turned to face the window again. As I stared out, I wondered where Charlotte was and what she was doing. Was she thinking about me as I thought about her?

CHARLOTTE

Jamie.

He haunted my thoughts like a ghost. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t let him go. In my defense, it had only been about two and a half weeks since we parted ways. Realistically, it would take much longer than that to get over someone I felt a strong connection with. I resigned myself to reliving every moment we had together since we met in that hotel lobby.
