As I stared at her, I couldn’t remember ever experiencing this level of vulnerability. The worst that could happen was that she’d say no. However, it was hard to come out with my answer because if she did turn me down, I’d be devastated.
Covering the distance between us while holding her gaze, I said, “In every way.”
I heard the catch in her breath as she continued to study me through wide eyes. “You mean, like…”
“I want us to date and see where things go.”
Charlotte blinked and the surprise in her eyes gave way to a cautious curiosity. “Are you serious?” Her tone was a mixture of disbelief and a hint of vulnerability. She then laughed. “What am I asking? You hunted me down.”
“If that doesn’t show you how serious I am, then I don’t know what will,” I said.
We stood centimeters apart, gazing at each other with mutual longing. I cupped her cheek and ran my thumb over her soft skin because I had to touch her.
“I spent every minute of every day since we parted ways wondering if I made a huge mistake walking away from you. I concluded that I did.”
Her eyes shone with that curiosity that I got to know during our short time together in Hawaii.
“When I decided to make a change in how I lived, that included following my heart. My heart tells me that you and I have something special, Charlotte.”
“Jamie…” My name fluttered from her lips as a soft sigh and her expression softened as she planted her palms on my chest. Immediately, I placed my hand over one of hers. “This is crazy.”
“What’s so crazy about it?” There was no denying that we clicked. I thought we had at first sight of each other.
“Our different lives. Lincoln…”
The latter put a slight damper on my determination to explore what was between us, but it wasn’t enough to allow me to give up.
I sighed. “Pursuing you further is probably wrong considering that Lincoln and I have yet to talk. He’s been avoiding me.”
She scoffed and pulled away, taking a few steps back to put distance between us. “What? Then why are you here telling me you want to date?”
My jaw clenched. “Because I can’t get over you, Charlotte.”
Silence ensued as we stared at each other. Her eyes were wide and filled with conflict, which mirrored the turmoil I felt inside too. While I was reluctant to upset my friend further, I simply couldn’t walk away from Charlotte. I tried and I failed.
“Maybe I’m being selfish.” I shrugged. “But what I felt with you in a few days… I’ve never felt with any woman my entire life. That’s worth exploring and you know it because I know you feel the same way.”
The unshed tears I’d seen in her eyes when we parted ways weeks ago told me she hadn’t really wanted to say goodbye.
She made a little groaning noise and her shoulders sagged. “Well, then, if you’re being selfish, then I guess I am too.” With that, she was in my arms before I could catch my next breath. Her body fit perfectly against mine. Satisfaction surged through me as I fitted my mouth over hers.
Her lips were soft and pliant. I deepened the kiss and it became ravenous in an instant. I’d gone too long without kissing her, without being wrapped in her warmth like this. I couldn’t get enough of her taste. I pressed her against the door, my hands roaming hungrily to touch every part of her that I could. Just as I made my way under her blouse to cup her breasts, she moaned into my mouth and pulled away.
“What are we doing?” she panted.
Feathering kisses along her jaw and bending to reach the delicate column of her neck, I whispered, “I’m hoping you’ll let me fuck you right here against this door.” I found the front clasp of her bra and was about to snap it open when she socked me on the arm.
“No. We’re in my mom’s house and my childhood bedroom for goodness’s sake.”
My arousal dampened… a little. I still wanted to have her in every way. “We can be really quiet…”
“Jamie.”
I sighed, backed off, and grumbled, “You’re supposed to be the fun, spontaneous one.”
She smirked. “Get over it, you fiend.”
“I missed you, Charlotte.” I gave her a once-over and plenty of dirty things played out in my mind as I did. “Missed feeling your skin against mine… missed being buried deep inside you…”
