Watching how she took me in made that desire flare within me. I swallowed back the urges. “If it happens, then it happens. But I don’t want to force it. The more natural the better.”

She nodded absently at that, looking so much smaller than me at that moment. “I get that. That’s always been my philosophy too.”

Having her so close reminded me of how her body had felt beneath mine, and how easily she bent for me. How she couldn’t get enough of that pleasure, and how I hungered for it in the same way.

It wouldn’t take much to reach out and touch her, to soothe that yearning. To place my lips on hers and make our way into my house for another round.

Even if we both seemed to measure each other up in that moment, side-stepping around the topic we hadn’t touched yet, I couldn’t push it. I needed to keep it together, no matter how strong that new hold she had over me seemed.

“To uphold our truce, I’m here when you need help,” Sara said at last, holding out a hand.

Glancing between her open palm and her patient eyes, my chest clenched.

I put my hand against hers as we shook on it, and the warm sensation shot through my system again, starting at my palm. It made that longing inside me twitch and almost beg for more.

I had never felt anything like it before, and I was intrigued.

“I’ll swing by at six tomorrow night then,” I said, confirming the question that had weighed on me all day. All that agonizing over what she might say finally laid to rest.

Sara was proving to be reliable, and I had the feeling I had put my faith in the right person.

“Great,” she chirped, carefully retracting her hand. “See you then.”

With a simple yet friendly smile, she turned away and headed for her place. Without another word, she went inside, leaving me to fixate on my lingering curiosity and interest.

There was something about her that caught my attention, but I couldn’t put the pieces together.

At the very least, I had a new partner in crime, and I’d have my mom off my back soon enough.

Chapter 14 - Sara

I didn’t think I’d be so nervous to meet my fake boyfriend’s parents, but it was impossible for me to shake.

Getting ready far quicker than I needed to thanks to the anxious turmoil within me, I paced the length of my hallway and glanced in my full-length mirror again and again. I mused my appearance, questioning if it was enough, or too much.

I kept my makeup simple and opted for dark trousers paired with a soft knit sweater. It wasn’t too flashy, but I felt it was suitable for a casual dinner.

While I couldn’t help but doubt my choices, I took a deep breath and settled in my resolve.

It didn’t mean anything anyway, and I didn’t need to stress about it.

When the doorbell rang, that anxiety crept back in, but I swallowed it back. Opening the door, I found Griffin looking equally as nervous, to my surprise.

His eyes scanned me quickly, then he forced a tight-lipped smile. “Ready?”

From the slight hesitation in his eyes and the clean trimmings of his appearance, he seemed to be taking it incredibly seriously. I tried to hold back a laugh, even if I found it amusing. It was endearing, at least.

“I am,” I answered, stepping out and closing the door behind me. “I like your outfit.”

I hoped it would help ease his nerves, and I did appreciate the effort he seemed to put into it. He wore classic jeans and a fitted black tee that hugged his muscles. On top, he matched it with a black and red flannel that he kept open.

He pressed that somewhat tense smile again. “Thanks. I like yours too.”

There was something very funny about how it all sounded, like we were two kids pretending to know how to date. Even if I felt nervous too, the thought helped me come around.

“They don’t live far from here, so I figured the walk there wouldn’t hurt,” he piped up, putting his hands in his pockets.

“That’s fine by me.”
