I just didn’t know what to do.

We chatted casually and ate our food until our plates were cleared, and I helped clean up the kitchen. I insisted, even after Sara told me I didn’t have to.

When it was all said and done, I got a text from Rowan about our plans to hit the gym. Remembering, I suddenly found myself not wanting to leave. I wanted to stay with Sara and find out where the day would take us. But I couldn’t leave him hanging.

“I should get going,” I said, slipping my shoes on as Sara pulled a feigned pout.

“So soon?”

I held my phone up with the texts open. “Alpha calls.”

“That’s too bad,” she said with a smile. “I was about to prepare a three-course lunch.”

Chuckling, I slipped my phone into my pocket and found myself face-to-face with her as she looked up at me, grinning. Feeling brave, I reached for her waist again and pulled her into me.

Sara’s brows lifted in surprise at that but met me halfway as I kissed her.

The contact sent jolts of energy through me, leaving warmth and sparks in their wake. There was something so addicting about it, and it was a task to pull myself away from.

Looking down at her, I smirked and gently caressed her cheek. “We should be convincing again soon.”

Sara’s skin warmed beneath my hand, and I couldn’t help but laugh at the reflex.

The gym was surprisingly empty when the two of us rolled up, to my relief. We could talk without anyone listening in.

Hitting up the rowing machines first, we got right into it.

I felt rejuvenated after my time with Sara, and it was certainly showing through my workout. It took additional exertion for me to feel any sort of strain, and my reps climbed higher and higher by the time Rowan glanced at me with a questioning brow.

“You training for the skills competition?”

“It wasn’t on my mind.”

He watched me for another moment, then shrugged and returned to his own reps. “Maybe you should. We’re putting it on to promote unity between the two groups. It wouldn’t be a bad idea for the alpha’s right hand to join. At this rate, you’ll be miles ahead of the others.”

I thought about it, but it didn’t strike me as something critical for me to partake in. “I don’t know if it’s really my thing. I’d rather get stronger in peace without flaunting it for the entire town to see.”

“I appreciate your modesty, Griff, but it’s more than just that. It’s a good way to impress someone you already have your eyes on,” he suggested, giving me a knowing look.

Scoffing, I waved him off. “Whatever, man.”

Rowan only chuckled at my dismissal and continued through his reps. “How are things with Sara, by the way? I’ve been curious.”

“Honestly, it’s been better than I expected,” I admitted, letting my mind briefly coast back to the night before. I tried to fight the knowing smile on my lips. “Really good, actually.”

“That sounds promising.”

“But there is one thing,” I started, remembering myself and what had triggered my anger. “I’m worried someone else has their eye on her.”

He paused to cock a brow curiously. “Who might that be?”

“Noah.”

“Harrison?” He asked, recognizing the name.

I shrugged. “Sure. The one on the Task Force. He was a real asshole to me the other day, and I smelled his scent on Sara. It almost made me lose my mind.”
